
Furious Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short, Men's Lacrosse Falls To #3 Penn, 13-12, In Ivy Tournament Semifinals

New York, N.Y. – Brown mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback bid, rallying from a four goal deficit, before falling to third-ranked and top seeded Penn, 13-12, in the semifinals of the Ivy League Tournament at Columbia's Wein Stadium.
Brown fell behind, 12-8, on a goal by Penn's Simon Mathias with 11:17 remaining in the game.
Freshman Reed Moshyedi (Potomac, MD) and sophomore Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) scored for the Bears to trail, 12-10, at the 7:04 mark.
Penn went back up by three goals, 13-10, on a Ryan Handley score, but the Bears answered with goals by sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) and Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA) with 51-seconds left on the clock, to trail, 13-12.
The Bears were unable to win the ensuing face-off and Penn ran out the clock.
"I'm very proud of our team," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "We came to play 60 minutes and we did just that. Hats off to Penn, who turned in an efficient effort. Our team never quit."
Aughavin had a big day for the Bears with four goals, while Panepinto had two goals and junior Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) two goals and an assist.
Junior goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made 10 saves in net for the Bears, including seven in the second half. Brown sophomore Matt McShea (Winnetka, IL) drew the start in the face-off x and captured 13-of-24 face-offs and scored his first collegiate goal off the face-off.
Bears freshman defenseman Andrew Geppert (Dover, NH) paced the Bears with three caused turnovers.
Brown held an early 2-1 lead on goals by McShea and Aughavin. The Quakers quickly went up by a 3-2 margin, but the Bears answered on a McCaleb score with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game, 3-3, after one quarter.
Five straight Penn goals to open the second quarter gave the Quakers an 8-3 lead before Aughavin scored late for the Bears to trail, 8-4 at the half.
The two teams exchanged goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Panepinto and Aughavin scoring for Brown to trail, 10-6, with 4:55 remaining in the quarter.
An acrobatic goal by McCaleb with 2:16 left in the quarter cut Penn's lead to 10-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.
