KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown University women's basketball senior guard Taylor Will has earned an RIAIAW Distinguished Student-Athlete Award, the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women announced at its annual awards reception on Monday night at the University of Rhode Island's Thomas M. Ryan Center.
A senior captain from Arlington Heights, Ill., Will demonstrated tremendous perseverance over the course of her career. After playing sparingly as a freshman, she became a critical starter for the Bears as a sophomore scoring close to 400 points, earning Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament MVP honors, and helping lead the team to the inaugural Ivy League Tournament.
As a junior, she averaged career highs in points, rebounds, assists, and steals per game before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Less than a year removed from her injury, she returned to the court for her senior season and scored in double figures 17 times. Over the course of her career, she scored in double figures 48 times.
The Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) recognizes distinguished female student-athletes competing at any of Rhode Island's nine intercollegiate athletic institutions.
Annually, the RIAIAW presents its Distinguished Athlete of the Year to one outstanding student-athlete from each college and university in the state, with the award based upon athletic excellence, academic success, and leadership qualities.
The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women was founded in 1971 to govern women's athletics in the United States and to administer national championships. It evolved out of the Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, founded in 1967. The association was one of the biggest advancements for women's athletics at the collegiate level at the time. Rhode Island is one of the few states with an active AIAW membership.
