Women’s Lacrosse Topples Sacred Heart, 17-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 17 goals on their way to defeating Sacred Heart, 17-2, on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears' defense was dominant, causing a season-best 24 turnovers while their offense outscored the Pioneers 12-1 in the first half and 5-1 in the second.
"It was an awesome team effort from start to finish," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We are excited to be back in action tomorrow."
Freshman Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) led the offensive charge with a career-high five points on four goals and one assist while junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (3G, 1A), sophomore Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (2G, 2A), freshman Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) (1G, 2A), freshman Kelsey Shea (Vienna, Va.) (2G), senior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (1G, 1A) and freshman Michaella McCarthy (Portsmouth, N.H.) (1G, 1A) all recorded multiple points. McCarthy's goal and assist were her first collegiate points while freshman Julia Kavan (Garden City, N.Y.) also notched her first-career assist.
Brown (5-5) jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the 23:07 mark with three of the six scores coming from DeRosa at 28:32, 27:02 and 25:26. Sacred Heart (1-8) netted its first goal at 22:31 on a free-position shot (Lydia Welau) before the Bears closed the opening stanza with six more, ending with a goal from Fowler at 7:48.
The Bears held a commanding 22-5 advantage in shots for the first frame and had a 22-3 lead in draw controls.
Brown moved the ball around in the second to wind the clock down. DeGennaro registered the first tally of the stanza at 25:19 and was followed by Moinuddin at 22:12 for a 14-1 Bear lead. The Pioneers scored their final goal at 20:33 (Cassie Cesario) and Brown closed with goals by Shea (7:50), McCarthy (3:54) and sophomore Katelyn Igneri (Syosset, N.Y.) (2:09).
The Bears again held a heavy advantage in shots for the second at 12-4 while draws went in favor of the Pioneers, 4-3.
Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) was credited with the win in net, recording two saves in 25:45 minutes of action. Sophomore Cait Barrett (East Windsor, N.J.) also contributed two stops in 26:28 minutes of action while junior Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) appeared in 7:47 minutes with no stops. Shana Hecht tallied a total of nine saves in the contest in 52:13 minutes of play while Amy Cadle played in 7:47 minutes, not recording a save.
The Bears return to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 31, hosting Fresno State at Stevenson-Pincince Field starting at noon on ESPN+ and NESNplus.
