PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Raleigh Relays and the Bryant Black & Gold Invitational as the Bears kicked off the outdoor season over the weekend.
Â
"It was a very good opening weekend," said head coach Tim Springfield. "I was especially happy with how our freshmen did, particularly in the events that aren't contested indoors. To see Jae come out with a huge discus throw right out of the gate was tremendous. Erin and Joe in the javelin, Keegan in the hammer and discus, Emily in the steeplechase--they all had very strong openers. I was also very happy to see Hannah Barakat return from an injury that kept her out of the indoor season with a strong race."

Raleigh Relays
Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) set a school record in the long jump and finished second overall with a leap of 20-7, breaking the previous record of 20-3.75, set by Carly Paul last season. Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) also earned second place in the triple jump at 40-4.25 and turned in a personal-best time in the 200 meters at 24.67.
Â
Rookie Emily Kompelien (Edina, Minn.) was 29th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:51.35 for seventh all-time in program history and May Stern (Providence, R.I.) was third in the 400 meters in a time of 55.17.
Â
Cameron Daly (Meredith, N.H.) was 28th in the 5,000 meters and set a personal best by 15 seconds with a time of 14:09.96.
Â
"Ijeoma had another terrific meet in a year of terrific meets and punched her ticket for the NCAA Regionals," said Springfield. "Cam ran a 15 second PR and put a mark on the board that almost always earns a spot to Regionals."
Â
Bryant Black & Gold Invitational
Brown racked up ten first-place finishes at Bryant. Hannah Barakat (Los Angeles, Calif.) set a meet and facility record in the 200 meters at 25.05 and Elise Claffey (Malvern, Pa.) set a meet record in the 800 meters at 2:12.95.
Â
Rookie Erin McMeniman (Dracut, Mass.) won the javelin with a throw of 148-3 for fourth all-time at Brown and fellow freshman Jae Crawford (Orlando, Fla.) topped the discus at 151-8 for eighth all-time in program history. Sophomore Felicia Renelus (Valley Stream, N.Y.) captured the triple jump with a leap of 40-0.5 for tenth in program history and Kendra Offiaeli (South Windsor, Conn.) won the shot put at 46-10.25.
Â
