ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Lexi Atwell and freshman Katie Klein each scored two goals as Brown University women's water polo topped Chapman University, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Allred Aquatics Center.
Playing in their first game since Mar. 3 and opening their eight-day, eight-game spring break trip to the state of California, the Bears (12-5) allowed the host Panthers (7-10) – the No. 7 ranked team in Division III – to score just once through the first three quarters, taking a 6-1 lead on their way to the victory.
"I'm happy with the way our defense played coming off a three-week break from games," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "This was a good start to our trip, and we'll look to make continuous improvement throughout the week."
Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) and Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) paced the Brown offense with their two goals apiece while seniors Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.), sophomore Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.), and freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) each scored one goal.
Sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) dished out two assists while Klein, Schaum, and Atwell each added an assist. Czajka came up with two steals, and McDougal notched three field blocks and two ejections drawn. Miller tacked on two field blocks and two ejections drawn.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 10 saves with an assist, and freshman net-minder Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) chipped in two saves.
Schaum opened the game's scoring before Chapman knotted the score at 1-1 heading to the second quarter. Miller netted the only goal of the second quarter, pushing Brown ahead 2-1 at halftime.
The Bears used a 4-0 run in the third quarter to extend their lead to 6-1 through three frames. Czajka started the run, Atwell followed with back-to-back goals, and McDougal capped the streak.
After Chapman pulled within 6-3 in the fourth quarter, Klein scored consecutive goals to give Brown insurance.
Next, Brown continues its eight-game, eight-day spring break trip tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 24, with match-ups against Whittier (2:00 p.m. ET) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (8:00 p.m. ET).
