Throughout the month of March, Brown Athletics will celebrate Women's History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize women who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.

Meremu Chikwendu '98, Women's Track & Field
Meremu Chikwendu '98 was one of the dominant runners in the Ivy League, both indoor and outdoor. The holder of 17 Heptagonal titles, Chikwendu captured five Heptagonal championships in the 200 meters, three in the 400 meters, six as part of the 4x400 meter relay, and another five in the 4x100 meter relay. Born in Nsukka, Nigeria, Chikwendu moved to the U.S. with her family at the age of eight. A star on the New Paltz High School track team where she won various league and sectional championships, she came to Brown in the fall of 1994 and quickly became one of the Ivy League's top sprinters. In just her freshman year, Chikwendu captured a total of five Heps titles, including the indoor and outdoor 200-meter championships. She went on to defend her 200-meter titles her sophomore year, accumulating four more Heps titles in 1996. As a junior, she recorded Heps titles in the outdoor 400 meters and a pair of relay titles, including her third straight indoor 4x400 relay championship. In her senior year, Chikwendu closed out a stellar career with five more Heps titles. For the indoor season, she took wins in the 400 meters and in the 4x400 meter relay, and in the outdoor season, Chikwendu took home titles in the 200 meters, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x400 relay.
