CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team competed in the 200 freestyle relay at the Tar Heel Last Chance Meet on Sunday at Koury Natatorium.
The Bears had three opportunities to swim under the NCAA "A" cut in the relay, a 1:17.41, with junior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.), junior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.), junior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) competing.
"The men traveled to UNC for a NCAA qualifying meet this weekend in an effort to send the first ever Brown relay to the NCAA meet," said head coach Chris Ip. "We had three opportunities to qualify for NCAA's and put together three solid efforts. Our team finished with a new school and UNC pool record of 1:17.67, just .26 shy of the qualifying time. Our staff is proud of the men for pushing themselves to compete in post conference competitions."
In the morning, the team swam to a 1:18.81. At finals, the Bears swam faster than the cut time, going a 1:17.17, good enough for 16th in the country. However, upon review the relay was disqualified due to the relay exchange with one of the swimmers false starting by -.03 of a second.
The group decided to swim one more time, time-trialing the event at the end of the meet. The foursome swam to a 1:17.67, dropping .14 of a second from their effort at the 2019 Ivy League Championships, a time that would have won the event. The squad missed the NCAA Qualifying standard by .26 of a second, however were able to set a new program record as well as a new UNC Pool Record in the event. Their effort wiped away the previous record of 1:18.57 set by Duke in 2015.
