
Women’s Basketball Falls at League-Leading Penn, 83-43

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Brown University women's basketball fell to the University of Pennsylvania – the top team in the Ivy League standings – 83-43 on Friday night at The Palestra.
The Quakers (14-3, 4-0 Ivy) – winners of three of the last five Ivy League titles and the only remaining unbeaten team in Ivy play – used a 22-0 run in the second quarter to take a 43-20 lead on the Bears (9-12, 1-4 Ivy) at the half and maintained at least that margin for the remainder of the game.
"We've got to put this one behind us and get ready for Princeton tomorrow," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "Penn is a well-coached team, and they did a lot of things well tonight."
Junior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds with six points. Senior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) netted a team-high eight points.
Senior guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) scored seven points and now has 1,655 career points, moving into 20th place in Ivy League history for career scoring.
Junior guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) added five points and four rebounds, and senior guard Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) tacked on five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
For Penn, Princess Aghayere totaled 13 points and seven rebounds, and Eleah Parker notched 12 points and seven boards. Ashley Russell scored 13 points, Emily Anderson netted 10 points, and Kendall Grasela dished out eight assists.
Steeves connected on a pair of 3-pointers inside the opening three minutes to give Brown an early 8-4 lead. Will converted a steal-and-score and finished the 3-point play to put the Bears back ahead, 11-10, with 4:27 left in the opening quarter. A 3-pointer from Mehta knotted the score at 14-14, and Brown remained within 19-14 of Penn heading to the second quarter.
A second-chance basket from Green and a free throw line jumper from Mehta cut the Bears' deficit to 21-18 at the 6:26 mark of the second quarter before the Quakers netted 22 straight points to go up 43-18 with 42 seconds left in the half. A baseline jumper from Gaziano ended the run, bringing the margin to 43-20 at the break.
After Penn went 0-for-9 from 3-point distance in the first quarter, the Quakers hit 6-of-7 shots from beyond the arc in the second stanza. In the first half, Penn forced Brown into 13 turnovers, taking a 19-5 edge in points off turnovers.
In the third quarter, a corner 3-pointer from sophomore guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) made the score 54-26 midway through the frame, and back-to-back baskets from Steeves and Mehta brought the margin to 59-30. Penn held a 64-30 lead at the end of the stanza.
In the fourth quarter, sophomore forward Morgan Clausen (Algonquin, Ill.) and freshman guard Nina Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) each scored her first two baskets of the season, including a 3-pointer for Mehta.
The Quakers held a 44-18 edge in points in the paint and outscored the Bears 45-16 between the second and third quarters. Penn held Brown to 26.2-percent shooting from the field and 16.1-percent shooting from 3-point distance. Penn earned its 15th straight win over Brown.
Next, Brown completes the weekend at Princeton tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 9, at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
