Providence, R.I. – Trailing 13-7 heading into the fourth quarter, Brown mounted a furious challenge in the final 15 minutes behind freshman Darian Cook's (Redding, CT) five straight goals, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell to Stony Brook, 13-11 at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
"We had Stony Brook early, put a lot of pressure on them, but didn't finish," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "At the end of the day there were plays to be made and we didn't make them."
Cook, who scored three goals in Brown's season opening win over Quinnipiac, scored his five goals on 10 shots, while adding an assist. Junior attackman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) had two goals and one assist for the Bears, while sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) had a goal and four assists. Senior Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA), junior Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) and sophomore Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) scored one goal each.
Tom Haun paced the Seawolves with three goals, while Layton Harrell, Chris Pickel and Connor Grippe added two goals each.
Bears' All-American goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made seven saves, while Stony Brook goalie Michael Bollinger registered 12 saves.
Brown had a 14-12 advantage in the face-off x, led by Jason Simaan (Newport Beach, CA), who won 13-of-22 face-offs.
The Bears dominated the opening nine minutes of the game, but only had a one goal lead on a score by McCaleb just 48 seconds into the game.
The Seawolves scored five of the next six goals, including two by Tom Haun, to pull ahead, 5-2 with 12:11 left in the second quarter.
Patrick Kaschalk scored for Stony Brook with 1:24 left in the third quarter for the Seawolves' largest lead, 13-6.
That's when Cook took over for the Bears, scoring four assisted goals and one unassisted tally to trail, 13-11, with 2:02 left in the game.
Brown travels to Baltimore, MD next week to take on UMBC on Saturday, March 2. Face-off is 12 noon at UMBC Stadium.
