Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through the "28 Days of Black at Brown" series. Each day during the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.

Samuel Nabrit M.S. '28, Ph.D. '32, Brown's First Doctoral Graduate
Samuel Milton Nabrit M.S. '28, Ph.D. '32 was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Brown, the University's first African American Trustee, and the first African American appointed to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. He was a professor at Atlanta University, president of Texas Southern University, a member of the National Science Board, and a founder of Upward Bound. He was the director of the Southern Fellowships Fund, a program that helped hundreds of African Americans earn their doctorates. In 1985 Brown established the Nabrit Fellowship to assist minority graduate students in recognition of Nabrit's many efforts to promote minority education, both at Brown and elsewhere.
