Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through the "28 Days of Black at Brown" series. Each day during the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.

Inman Page 1877, Brown's First Black Graduate
Inman Edward Page, Class of 1877, was among Brown University's first black students. Born a slave in Warrenton, Virginia, he (along with George Washington Milford) become one of the first two black graduates from the University in 1877. Page was valedictorian of his class and elected class orator, giving a speech at Commencement that was noted by the Providence Journal for its intellectual power and eloquence. He went on to become a distinguished educator and academic administrator, serving as president of four colleges or universities. Novelist Ralph Ellison was among the many pupils Page influenced. In 1918, the late Brown President W.H.P. Faunce conferred upon Page an honorary master's degree.
