PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer head coach Kia McNeill and assistant coaches Matt Mones, Raleigh DeRose, and Andre Reis have earned East Region Staff of the Year honors through a vote of the region's coaches, the United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday.
McNeill – the 2019 Ivy League Coach of the Year – and her staff led the Bears to a historic season in which the team earned its first Ivy League title and NCAA appearance since 1994. In 2019, Brown set program records for wins in a season (14), home wins in a season (11), and shutouts in a season (13).
The Bears posted an overall record of 14-2-3, while registering an undefeated 6-0-1 mark in Ivy League play, finishing the year unbeaten in conference play for the first time since 1994. Brown notched an 11-0-1 mark at home, including an 11-0-0 record during the regular season.
Brown won its 13th Ivy League title in program history, tied for the most in conference history, while making its seventh all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Bears advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament after topping Monmouth in a penalty kick shootout, 4-1.
The Bears featured in the top 10 of the NCAA RPI rankings over the final five weeks of the regular season, checking in as the No. 10 team in the rankings used for NCAA selections.
Over the course of 2019, Brown tallied six All-Ivy selections – including the Ivy League Rookie of the Year – registered five All-Region choices, earned 10 Ivy League weekly awards, and placed four student-athletes on Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week.
Brown distinguished itself as one of the top defensive teams in the country, ranking second in the NCAA in goals allowed (eight), third in save percentage (.890), and fifth in GAA (0.40).
The Bears outscored opponents 23-2 in their 12 home matches in 2019 and have gone 14-0-1 in their last 15 home matches, outscoring opponents 35-3.
The staff has now earned a spot on the ballot for National Staff of the Year. The United Soccer Coaches will announce the National Staff of the Year on Dec. 20.
