TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Junior Hannah Butler (Dewitt, N.Y.) of the Brown women's cross country team competed against the top runners in the nation at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Facing cold and muddy conditions, Butler finished 106th overall out of 254 total participants, as she completed the 6-kilometer course in a time of 21:17.1. Butler placed fourth among Ivy League runners and improved her standing over the course of the race, moving up from 139th place at the 2-kilometer mark.
"This was a very strong race for Hannah," said head coach Tim Springfield. "She showed a lot of poise today, especially since it was her first time at the NCAA Nationals. There's a different level of intensity here, and it's very easy to lose focus and control, but Hannah was rock solid from start to finish. I'm very proud of her race, and I think we learned some things for next year also."
Butler reached the national championship for the first time in her career after she placed third overall at the Northeast Regionals and earned a berth as an individual qualifier. She was named to the All-Northeast Region Team for her efforts.
Butler, a Second Team All-Ivy selection, is the program's first cross country runner to qualify for nationals since Natalie Schudrowitz in 2015. She was one of just four men's and women's runners from the Ivy League to earn an individual bid to nationals.
