NEW YORK – Juniors Hannah Butler (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) both finished inside the top-10 as the Brown women's cross country team placed seventh at the Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships Friday at Van Cortlandt Park.
Columbia claimed the team title with 57 points, followed by Harvard (89), Penn (89), Princeton (90), Yale (118), Cornell (127), Brown (131) and Dartmouth (174).
"We knew going in that we weren't at full strength due to injury, but the athletes who were able to line up performed very well," said head coach Tim Springfield. "The improvement of our top four runners from last year was remarkable, and it's been a long time since we had two in the top 10."
Butler finished ninth overall as she navigated the 6-kilometer course at 21:20.7, earning Second Team All-Ivy honors, as she moved up 13 spots during the midway point of the race. Valentine also earned Second Team accolades with a tenth-place performance in a time of 21:24.7.
From there, Ally Hajda (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) turned in a 26th-place finish at 22:02.9, before senior Chloe Conway (Manchester, N.H.) took 32nd in a time of 22:07.6. Isabela Bartczak (Orlando, Fla.) finished at 24:27.9 to round out the scorers.
"Hannah and Samantha did a great job up front, and Ally and Chloe had their best races ever," added Springfield.
The Bears will compete at the Northeast Regional Championships on Nov. 15 at Audobon Golf Course in Amherst, N.Y.
