PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Sophia Miller approached a double-double with nine kills and nine digs, but Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-23) decision to Harvard University on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Â
The Bears (9-4, 1-2 Ivy) nearly extended the match to a fourth set before the visiting Crimson (3-9, 1-2 Ivy) rallied to complete the straight-set win.
Â
"Harvard was the better team tonight," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "They executed their scout really well. They contained our outsides. We still had opportunities to swing for points, but Harvard did a great job preparing for this match. They were aggressive the entire time."
Â
Miller (Dallas, Texas) almost posted double-doubles on back-to-back nights with her nine kills and nine digs while sophomore Olivia Dukat (Roswell, Ga.) posted a team-high 10.5 points on nine kills and three blocks.
Â
Senior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) tallied nine digs and four service aces, freshman Kaitlyn Wong (Los Altos, Calif.) registered nine digs, and sophomore Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) and junior Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) dished out 16 and 11 assists respectively.
Â
"This was a good wakeup call for us to understand how important it is to protect our level in practice and make sure we come back tough over and over again," Kim said. "We showed the ability to do that yesterday. Now we just have to become a team that can do that on two consecutive days."
Â
In set one, Brown remained within three points of Harvard at 19-16 before the Crimson closed the set on a 5-1 run for a 25-17 set victory.
Â
The Bears gained a 16-15 lead in set two prior to the Crimson scoring five straight points to pull ahead 20-16. Brown cut the margin to 21-19, but Harvard concluded the frame on a 4-1 spurt to take the stanza, 25-20. Dukat landed four kills in the frame while Miller added three kills and four digs.
Â
Brown responded in set three, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage. The Bears maintained a 20-12 edge before the Crimson used a 9-1 streak to knot the score at 21-21. The hosts kept it tied at 23-23 before the visitors claimed the next two points for a 25-23 win. Miller notched three kills on five swings with no errors in the frame while Ehlert contributed five digs and two aces.
Â
For Harvard, Mindie Mabry and Grace Allen each terminated on 13 kills, Ashley Wang handed out a match-best 22 assists, and Sandra Zeng made a match-high 17 digs.
Â
Next, Brown competes in its first back-to-back Ivy League road weekend with matches at Penn on Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and at Princeton on Oct. 12 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
