Feature: Women’s Basketball Set to Tip-Off 2019-20 Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's basketball tips off its 2019-20 season against Bryant on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) with a new group of student-athletes excited to take the court together for the first time as a team.
"Practice is going pretty well," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We have a young group, but they are coachable and are working hard. We have a long way to go, but we are getting better almost every day. I'm pleased with the effort so far."
The Bears' returning nucleus includes a trio of captains in senior guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.), senior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.), and junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.).
"It's definitely an honor – I love being a captain alongside Justine and Haley," Leonidas said. "They are both very good leaders. I know that I have to hold myself and my teammates accountable when we come to practice every day."
Gaziano – a three-time All-Ivy selection – returns as the Bears' most experienced player. In the Brown record books, she ranks sixth in career points (1,388), sixth in career 3-pointers made (149), sixth in career free throws made (249), and ninth in career field goals made (495).
"I'm really excited about this year," Gaziano said. "It's a great opportunity for me to put everything that I've worked for throughout my college career into this last season. I'm really focused on what we can do as a team to be as successful as we can."
Brown also returns junior guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) – who missed the 2018-19 season due to injury – and welcomes six freshmen to the program alongside four sophomores.
"We have a lot of young players, but we push each other really hard in practice," Dale said. "We are all competitors, and we all want to win. As time goes on, we'll get more and more comfortable playing with each other."
Behn – now in her sixth season as the head coach of the Bears – will look to the 2019-20 season as a new opportunity and a blank slate for the team.
"We're starting with a fresh slate," Behn said. "We were disappointed in our season last year so we are trying to learn from those mistakes. We have a young, eager group. We try to keep it simple and get better every day. Hopefully, we will be in a position to be more competitive."
