PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Eighth-ranked Princeton capitalized on a strong first quarter to help lead the team to a 6-0 win over Brown field hockey on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears were able to limit the Tigers the rest of the way with freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) tying her career-high of nine saves in three quarters of play.
"I think that we had one bad quarter and then played ourselves into the match," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was really proud of the way we adjusted. We had several players in new positions just to change up our tempo and it worked. I think we have a lot to be proud of and a lot to take away moving forward."
Princeton (9-4, 4-0 Ivy League) went up 2-0 with two scores from Ali McCarthy (1:30, 2:25) to open the action. Tallies from Hannah Davey (6:18) and Clara Roth (8:16) made it 4-0 after 15 minutes of play.
Brown (5-8, 1-3 Ivy League) responded well in the second quarter, limiting the Tigers to just three shot while generating two, to wrap up a scoreless period.
Roth would add two more goals in the third quarter (33:50, 44:17) before the Bears responded with another scoreless period in the fourth. Brine came up with five saves in the final frame to bring her game total to nine. Freshman Calista Manuzza (North Caldwell, N.J.) also added three saves in the contest in the first quarter of play.
Senior Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) provided scoring chances for Brown in the second half.
Roth led Princeton with three goals while Grace Baylis and Grace Brightbill teamed up for the win in the cage.
Brown will next hit the road for its next two contests, taking on Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 26 (11:30 a.m.) and Quinnipiac on Sunday, Oct. 27 (1:00 p.m.).
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
