PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) recorded a collegiate-best nine saves and sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) scored the lone goal to help lead the Brown field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday evening at Goldberger Family Field.
"It was a hard fought battle," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I thought Holy Cross really played a good match today. We had some outstanding play from our defense and Jodie Brine today."
Van Rootselaar netted the contest's only goal at 38:81 of the third quarter and Brine came up with a big save on a penalty stroke at 56:31 to preserve the shutout and win for Brown (5-7).
A scoreless first half saw Holy Cross (6-7) outshoot Brown by a 6-4 margin while penalty corners also favored the visitor's at 4-2. Brine made five saves in the opening half in her first career start, which included three stops in the first two minutes of action.Â
The Bears took the lead following a penalty corner when van Rootselaar collected a pass from junior Kelly Raymond (Salem, N.H.) and took a couple dribbles before firing a shot into the back of the cage. Brine continued her solid play in the third, adding three more saves, while Brown held a commanding 8-4 advantage in shots for the frame.
Holy Cross was pressing in the fourth and was awarded a penalty stroke at 56:31 but Brine was there to make the stop. From there, the Bears maintained possession and ran out the clock.
Overall, Brown outshot Holy Cross 15-12 which included a 11-6 showing in the second half. Corners ended tied, 7-7, with Brown taking five in the third period. With today's goal, van Rootselaar extends her point streak to five games with 15 points scored in the span (6G, 3A).
The Crusaders were led by Emily Devine who had a defensive save in in the third while Marcia LaPlante concluded the game with six stops in the cage.Â
Brown will next welcome No. 8 Princeton to Goldberger Family Field on Saturday, Oct. 19 starting at 12:00 p.m.
