Wrestling Tallies Four Champions, Nine Place-Winners at Wildcat Open

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Tucker Ziegler, sophomore Nino Bastianelli, and freshmen Reese Fry and Jack Bokina all earned tournament titles as Brown University wrestling tallied four champions and nine place-winners at the Johnson & Wales Wildcat Open on Sunday at the Wildcat Center.

All nine Bears that competed on the day placed at the event as Brown compiled four first-place finishes, two second-place showings, a third-place finish, fourth-place finish, and sixth-place finish.
"Today was a great day for our guys to get another opportunity to wrestle, and they competed really well," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "It was a chance to be able to build some confidence, win matches, and come home with some titles."

Fry (Manchester, Michigan) won the 125-pound weight class, Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.) took the 149-pound title, Bastianelli (Maysville, Mich.) captured the 184-pound weight class, and Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) claimed first at 197 pounds. All four wrestlers went undefeated on the day, combining for a 14-0 record.

Junior Theo Powers (Mexico, N.Y.) went 3-1 to place second at 141 pounds, winning his first three bouts, and freshman Samuel Lynch (Foster, R.I.) finished 3-1 and came in second at 149 pounds. The first-place match at 149 featured a pair of Bears in Bokina and Lynch.

Freshman Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) placed third at 174 pounds behind a 5-1 record, including four straight wins to close the day. Freshman David Heath (North Canton, Ohio) finished fourth at 197 pounds with a 3-2 mark, and classmate Ryan O'Grady (Nazareth, Pa.) came in sixth at 141 pounds with a 4-2 record.

Next, Brown will compete in a pair of Ivy League and EIWA road duals on Saturday, February 2 at Penn (1:00 p.m.) and at Princeton (5:00 p.m.).
