GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior guard Justine Gaziano scored a game-high 17 points, and freshman guard Traiva Breedlove netted a career-best 15 points as Brown University women's basketball defeated Adelphi University, 75-62, on Wednesday evening at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Playing their sixth consecutive game away from home and competing in their third game in four days, the Bears (8-7) led 42-26 at halftime and held an edge as large as 23 points in the second half on their way to the win over the host Division II Panthers (6-6).
"I was really impressed with this Adelphi team. Coach Traversi is doing a great job with this program. They look like a Division I team," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We did some good things, but we did lose focus a few times. We've been doing a lot of traveling and are a little beat up mentally so I'm happy that we got the win."
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) netted her 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and added five rebounds and three assists. She has scored in double figures in 14 of 15 games this season.
Breedlove (Rochester, N.Y.) scored her 15 points on 6-of-8 field goals and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. She converted a trio of old-fashioned 3-point plays in the third quarter as part of her third double-figure scoring effort of the year.
Senior guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 11 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. She has scored in double figures in 14 of 15 games on the year.
Senior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) registered 13 points and now has 1,062 career points, moving into 17th place on Brown's all-time scoring list and passing Shelly Weaver '93 (1,056 career points).
Playing in her 100th career game, senior forward Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) totaled nine points on 4-of-6 shooting alongside six rebounds and three blocks. She is the only Bear to play in all 100 games since the start of the 2015-16 season.
Brown scored over 70 points for the seventh time in its last eight games. In their penultimate non-conference game, the Bears led 42-28 in points in the paint and limited the Panthers to 33.3 percent shooting from the field (26-of-78).
After Adelphi opened the game with a 9-4 lead, Brown closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run, taking a 17-11 advantage at the end of one. During the run, Mehta connected on a wing 3-pointer, and Butler and Breedlove each scored four points.
Butler opened the second quarter's scoring with a trey before Adelphi pulled within 22-16. The Bears responded with another 13-2 run, gaining a 35-18 edge with 4:25 to play in the half. Breedlove completed two old-fashioned 3-point plays during the stretch. A second-chance layup from junior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) made the margin 37-20, and Breedlove's third 3-point play of the quarter helped Brown take a 42-26 lead at halftime.
The Bears scored the first seven points of the second half, pulling ahead 49-26 just over a minute into the third quarter. A 3-pointer from Steeves kept the Bears up 56-37, and a conventional 3-point play from senior guard Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) capped an 8-1 run that made the margin 61-38 with 4:11 left in the frame. Four points from Gaziano gave Brown a 65-49 lead through three.
A layup from Gaziano, 3-pointer from Mehta, and layup from freshman forward Alana Kelley (Phoenix, Ariz.) pushed Brown ahead 73-51 with 4:08 to play before the Panthers closed the game on an 11-2 run.
For Adelphi, Niajah Morgan scored a team-high 14 points, and Leonie Edringer tallied a double-double on 12 points and 14 rebounds.
