Volleyball Comes All the Way Back to Beat Penn in Five Sets, 3-2

5HILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Gabrielle Moriconi tallied a match-high 16 kills as Brown University volleyball came all the way back to beat the University of Pennsylvania in five sets, 3-2 (23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-13), on Saturday evening at The Palestra.

Facing a 2-0 set deficit, the Bears (8-5, 1-2 Ivy) rallied to win the next three frames, including a win in extra points in set four, to defeat the Quakers (3-11, 0-3 Ivy) at The Palestra for the first time since Nov. 15, 2013.

The match saw 33 ties and 19 lead changes, including 11 ties and six lead changes in a set three that saw momentum swing in favor of Brown.

Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) posted double-figure kills for the second time on the weekend and for the sixth time on the season while adding six digs and four blocks.
Â
Freshman setter Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) totaled her sixth double-double on the year with 47 assists and 10 digs. She compiled over 40 assists for the sixth time as a rookie. Freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) led five Brown student-athletes in double-figure digs with 20 digs.

Junior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) registered nine kills and 12 digs, senior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) Â notched seven kills and 13 digs, and senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) contributed a season-high 17 digs. Sophomore Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) chipped in eight kills.

Brown began its comeback with a 25-22 win in set three. Maintaining a 22-21 lead, the Bears won three of the last four points to close the frame. Moriconi totaled seven kills and five digs in the period while Sellers connected on 14 assists.

The Bears sent the match to a decisive fifth set with a 26-24 victory in set four behind four kills from Grover and 12 assists from Sellers. Trailing 22-20, the Bears used a 4-1 spurt to pull ahead 24-23. After Penn tied the score at 24-24, the Bears claimed the next two points to take the set.

In set five, Brown rallied from a 10-7 deficit to earn a 15-13 set win. The Bears scored five straight points to go ahead 12-10 before the Quakers knotted the count at 13-13. Brown won the next two points to capture the match.

Penn opened the match with a 25-23 win in set one despite four kills apiece from Stillwell and Moriconi. The Bears tied the set at 23-23 before the hosts snagged the last two points.

The Quakers took a 2-0 set lead with a 25-17 win in set two. Penn took advantages at 10-4, 14-6, and 19-9 on its way to the win before Brown began its comeback in set three.

For Penn, Caroline Furrer posted a match-best 31 digs, Grace James dished out 39 assists, and Raven Sulaimon finished with 11 kills.

Next, Brown remains on the road for matches at Cornell (Oct. 5, 7:00 p.m.) and at Columbia (Oct. 6, 5:00 p.m.) on ESPN .
