
Volleyball Drops Five-Set Decision to League Leading Cornell, 3-2

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Sabrina Stillwell posted 15 kills, and sophomore Gabrielle Moriconi tallied 14 kills, but Brown University volleyball fell to Cornell University, 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-8), on Friday night at Newman Arena.

The Bears (8-6, 1-3 Ivy) captured the match's first two sets before the host Big Red (9-5, 4-0 Ivy) – who remained atop the Ivy League standings with an undefeated 4-0 conference mark – took the final three frames.

Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added seven digs to her team-high 15 kills – her 11th match this season with double-figure kills. She now has 963 career kills. Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) notched her seventh double-figure kill match of the year. Sophomore Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered nine kills and five blocks.

Junior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) recorded 15 digs – her 10th match with double-digit digs on the year while freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) came up with 12 digs – her 11th match with 10 or more digs.

Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) totaled 18 assists and seven digs, and senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) distributed 15 assists.

The Bears opened the match with a 25-20 victory in set one. With the score tied at 16-16, Brown used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 22-17. Stillwell terminated on four kills on .571 hitting in the stanza.

Brown took a 2-0 set lead behind a 25-22 win in set two. The Bears scored five straight points to pull ahead 13-5 early in the frame and remained ahead 24-17 before holding off a late rally from the Big Red. Stillwell tallied five kills in the period.

Cornell staved off elimination with a 25-17 win in set three. After the Bears pulled within 18-17, the hosts closed the frame on a 7-0 run, taking the first lead larger than four points in the set.

The Big Red forced a fifth frame with a 25-15 win in set four. Cornell used a 5-0 run to pull ahead 15-6 and extended its lead to 21-9. Brown notched six consecutive points to cut the margin to 21-15 before the hosts scored the set's final four points.

In set five, Cornell led 8-4 at the switch and went up 9-4 before a 3-0 spurt from the Bears trimmed their deficit to 9-7. The Big Red used a 5-0 run to go up 14-7 before winning the frame 15-8.

For Cornell, Madison Baptiste landed 15 kills, Zoe Chamness handed out a match-high 42 assists, and Lily Barber contributed a match-best 19 digs.
