Providence, R.I. – Junior wide receiver Jakob Prall (Tipp City, OH) scored three touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Michael McGovern (St. Louis, MO) threw one and ran for another, to lift Brown to a 35-7 non-league win over Georgetown Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium.
The Bears improve to 1-2 on the season heading into next week's Governor's Cup match-up against Rhode Island at Meade Stadium, while the Hoyas fall to 1-4 on the season, dropping their fourth straight game.
"Our offense really set the tone for the game, scoring on our first drive and opening up a 21-0 lead," said Brown head coach Phil Estes. "The defense did its job, keeping Georgetown out of the end zone for most of the game."
McGovern racked up 321 yards of total offense, passing for 268 yards and a touchdown and running for 53 yards and a touchdown. He completed 23-of-42 passes overall.
"Michael did an outstanding job making plays with his feet and getting the ball downfield to our receivers," added Estes.
Prall scored Brown's first three touchdowns, first on a three-yard pass from McGovern, then on runs of 10 and five yards. He made five catches for 53 yards and rushed for 15 yards. Junior Jaelon Blandburg (Orange County, CA) also caught five passes and had 69 receiving yards.
Brown's defense stood strong throughout the game with sophomore Chima Amushie (Richmond, TX) leading the way with nine tackles, including eight solo hits. Senior Kenari Drayton (Santa Ana, CA) and junior Brendan Pyne (Bradenton, FL) made six tackles each.
Senior Sebastian Dovi (Newark, DE) intercepted his second pass of the season for the Bears and junior Michael Hoecht (Oakwood, OH) recorded Brown's lone quarterback sack.
Georgetown rushed for 248 yards as a team, led by Jackson Saffold with 82 yards. Joshua Thomas rushed for 57 yards and scored Georgetown's lone touchdown on a 17-yard run.
Hoyas' quarterback Gunther Johnson completed 11-of-29 passes for 73 yards. Blaise Brown paced the Georgetown defense with eight tackles.
McGovern marched the Bears 75 yards down the field on their opening drive, and gave Brown a 7-0 lead on a three-yard touchdown pass to Prall with 10:09 left in opening quarter. The Bears' sophomore quarterback connected on 4-of-6 passes on the opening drive and had a seven-yard run for a first down.
While Brown's next scoring drive was officially 77 yards, the Bears actually needed to drive 99 yards after a bad snap put the ball at the Bears' one-yard line. After several key first down pick-ups, Prall scored on a 10-yard touchdown for a 14-0 Brown lead after one quarter.
The Bears capitalized on a Georgetown miscue, gaining possession on the Hoyas' five-yard line when sophomore David Bak (Tampa, FL) recovered a muffed punt. Prall struck once again, this time getting into the end zone on a five-yard run to lift the Bears to a 21-0 lead at the half.
Georgetown scored its first touchdown early in second half when Thomas scored on a reverse to cut Brown's lead to 21-7 with 11:40 left in the third quarter.
McGovern drove the Bears down field with a 40-yard completion to freshman Allen Smith (Westerville, OH) to advance the ball to the Georgetown four-yard line. Three plays later, McGovern scored from five yards out to lift the Bears to a 28-7 advantage.
Brown finished the scoring with a late scoring drive, going 71 yards in 15 plays, capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Smith for his first collegiate touchdown.
Brown travels to Kingston, Rhode Island on Saturday, October 6, to face the University of Rhode Island in the 103rd renewal of the Governor's Cup football game between the two Rhode Island colleges. Game time is 1:00 pm at Mead Stadium.
