Bears Taken Down By Rhode Island, 48-0, In 103rd Governor’s Cup Game

Kingston, R.I. - Brown ran into a buzz-saw in nationally 17th-ranked Rhode Island Saturday afternoon, falling to the surging Rams, 48-0, in the 103rd Governor's Cup football game at Meade Stadium. Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo presented the Governor's Cup at the completion of the game.
Rhode Island extends its record to 4-1 overall, while Brown falls to 1-3.
"We're a young team and we have to execute better," said Brown head coach Phil Estes. "Rhode Island is a really good football team that made plays. This is not a defining moment in our season and I expect us to improve."
Bears' quarterback Michael McGovern (St. Louis, MO) was running away from the fierce URI pass rush all day and completed 11-of-27 passes for 101 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Graeme Davis (Winchester, MA) caught a career high three passes for the Bears.
Defensively, senior linebacker Daniel Aidman (Austin, TX) had a busy day, making a game high 12 tackles, including one for a loss. Junior Brendan Pyne (Bradenton, FL) and sophomore Chima Amushie (Richmond, TX) racked up nine tackles each. Senior Jorquel Condomina (Naples, FL)intercepted his second pass of the season.
Rhode Island quarterback Vito Priore, starting in place of injured JaJuan Lawson, threw for a career high 310 yards and four touchdowns, completing 19-of-25 passes.
The Bears struggled to get their offense on track, falling behind by a 27-0 margin at the half, while generating 86 yards of total offense vs. 319 yards for the Rams. Rhode Island rushed for 229 yards overall, led by Zoe Bryant with 92 yards on 15 carries.
The Rams finished the day with 580 yards of total offense.
The Rams got on the scoreboard first when CJ Carrick booted a 40-yard field goal with 8:00 left in the opening quarter for a 3-0 lead. Rhode Island extended its lead to 10-0 to open the second quarter on a 19 pass from Priore to Aaron Parker.
URI's lead expanded to 17-0 on a 25-yard pass from Priore to Isaiah Coulter with 12:28 left in the second quarter. A 19-yard Carrick field goal with 5:02 remaining gave the Rams a 20-0 advantage, followed by Priore's third touchdown of the half, this time to Marven Beauvais with 40 seconds left in the half for a 27-0 URI lead.
The Rams opened up a 41-0 lead after three quarters, and expanded their lead to 48-0 midway through the fourth quarter.
Brown returns to Ivy League play next Saturday, October 13, traveling to Princeton, New Jersey to battle the Princeton Tigers. Game time is 1:00 pm at Princeton Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
