
Cross Country Races at Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown

BOSTON – Rookie Maya Smith and senior Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, N.J.) both posted a top-20 finishes as the Brown men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown Friday at Franklin Park.

The women's team placed sixth out of 24 teams with 187 points, while the men's team finished 15th overall with 426 points. Mississippi claimed the women's title and Syracuse won the men's side.

Individually, Smith placed 12th out of 218 runners, completing the 5-kilometer course in a time of 17:37. Jeffers was not far behind at 17th overall in a time of 17:42.

Senior Allison Bellows (Coventry, R.I.) turned in a 41st-place finish at 18:01. Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) and Emily Kompelien (Edina, Minn.) crossed at 54th and 63rd in times of 18:10 and 18:15 to round out the scorers.

Senior Franco Martins (Orlando, Fla.) led the men's team, as he placed 37th on the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24:56. Dominic Morganti (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Tyler Smith (Vernon Hills, Ill.) were crossed at 86th and 91st, respectively, at 25:43 and 25:45.

David Scherrer (Virginia Beach, Va.) also crossed in a time of 25:45 for 93rd overall, before Ben McCoy (Alpharetta, Ga.) crossed at 26:03.

Brown will return to the course on October 6 for the New England Championship.
