
Stillwell Lands 24 Kills, Volleyball Tops Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Sabrina Stillwell tallied 24 kills, propelling Brown University volleyball to a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-9, 25-20) victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in its season opener on Friday evening at the Friar Classic.

Playing at Providence College's Alumni Hall, the Bears (1-0) won sets one, two, and three against the Knights (0-4), taking control of the match with a 25-9 victory in set three to gain a 2-1 set lead. The match marked the debut for Brown first-year head coach Ahen Kim.

Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) hit .340 in the match and completed the double-double with 14 digs. She posted 20 or more kills in a contest for the third time in her career and notched her most kills since landing 32 kills – the second-highest single-match total in school history – vs. Columbia on Oct. 3, 2015.

Sophomore Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) supported her with 12 kills on .290 hitting. Junior Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) registered six blocks, and freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) dished out a match-high 35 assists alongside nine digs.

Freshman Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) led the Bears with 17 digs while senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) and junior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) each chipped in 11 digs. Freshman Ashley Oelrich (Newberry, Fla.) scored on five service aces.

Leading 13-12 midway through set one, Brown used a 5-1 run to pull ahead 18-13. The Knights could pull no closer than three points the rest of the way as the Bears took a 25-19 set win. Stillwell and Grover each terminated on four kills in the frame.

In set two, Brown jumped out to a 5-0 lead before FDU rallied to gain a 15-10 advantage. The Bears came within 22-21 late in the set before the Knights won the stanza's last three points to take the period 25-21. Stillwell came up with three kills and five digs in the frame.

With the set score tied at 1-1, Stillwell registered nine kills on .750 hitting to push Brown to a 25-9 win in set three. Trailing 7-6, the Bears outscored FDU 19-2 the rest of the way, including a 10-0 run. Sellers dished out 14 assists in the set.

Brown closed the match with a 25-20 victory in set four behind another eight kills on .421 hitting from Stillwell. The Bears earned an 18-13 edge prior to FDU knotting the score at 19-19. Brown then closed the set on a 6-1 run.

For FDU, Erika Sullivan recorded a match-high 18 digs, and McKenna Setterlund distributed a team-high 21 assists. Erin Singer landed seven kills.

Next, Brown continues play at the Friar Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 1 with match-ups against UMass Lowell (12:30 p.m.) and host Providence College (5:30 p.m.).
