
Volleyball Bests UMass Lowell, Drops Decision to Providence at Friar Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University volleyball defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-17), and fell to host Providence College, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 29-27) on Saturday at the Friar Classic inside Alumni Hall.

The Bears (2-1) swept the River Hawks (0-6) in their first contest of the day before dropping a decision to the host Friars (4-2) in a match that saw 31 ties and 16 lead changes.

Between the two matches, senior All-Tournament Team honoree Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied 26 kills (3.71 per set) and posted a double-double vs. Providence. Freshman setter Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) – Brown's other All-Tournament Team selection – notched double-doubles in both contests, totaling 68 assists (9.71 per set) and 28 digs (4.00 per set) on the day.

For the tournament, Stillwell registered 50 kills (4.55 per set) and 39 digs (3.55 per set) while Sellers recorded 103 assists (9.36 per set) and 37 digs (3.36 per set).

Next, Brown plays in the Hartford Invitational, taking on the host Hawks (Sept. 8, 1:00 p.m.), Niagara (Sept. 8, 5:00 p.m.), and Bucknell (Sept. 9, 11:00 a.m.).

The Bears hit .284 as a team in the match, including a .387 hitting percentage in set two, on their way to the victory over the River Hawks.

Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched her 12 kills on .370 hitting while senior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) each posted seven kills. Ehlert hit .412 with no errors.

Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) distributed a match-best 30 assists and contributed 10 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Freshman Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) registered a team-high 14 digs.

Holding a 12-10 edge in set one, Brown used a 4-0 streak to pull ahead 16-10. UMass Lowell rallied to tie the set at 18-18 and 21-21 before the Bears won four of the frame's final six points to take the set, 25-23. Ehlert posted three kills and four block assists in the stanza.
