Volleyball Bests UMass Lowell, Drops Decision to Providence at Friar Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University volleyball defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-17), and fell to host Providence College, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 29-27) on Saturday at the Friar Classic inside Alumni Hall.

The Bears (2-1) swept the River Hawks (0-6) in their first contest of the day before dropping a decision to the host Friars (4-2) in a match that saw 31 ties and 16 lead changes.

Between the two matches, senior All-Tournament Team honoree Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied 26 kills (3.71 per set) and posted a double-double vs. Providence. Freshman setter Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) – Brown's other All-Tournament Team selection – notched double-doubles in both contests, totaling 68 assists (9.71 per set) and 28 digs (4.00 per set) on the day.

For the tournament, Stillwell registered 50 kills (4.55 per set) and 39 digs (3.55 per set) while Sellers recorded 103 assists (9.36 per set) and 37 digs (3.36 per set).

Next, Brown plays in the Hartford Invitational, taking on the host Hawks (Sept. 8, 1:00 p.m.), Niagara (Sept. 8, 5:00 p.m.), and Bucknell (Sept. 9, 11:00 a.m.).

Match 1: Brown 3, UMass Lowell 0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-17)

Sophomore Eliza Grover tallied a match-high 12 kills as Brown topped UMass Lowell, 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-17), on Saturday afternoon in its first contest of the day and second match overall at the Friar Classic.

The Bears hit .284 as a team in the match, including a .387 hitting percentage in set two, on their way to the victory over the River Hawks.

Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched her 12 kills on .370 hitting while senior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) each posted seven kills. Ehlert hit .412 with no errors.

Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) distributed a match-best 30 assists and contributed 10 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Freshman Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) registered a team-high 14 digs.

Holding a 12-10 edge in set one, Brown used a 4-0 streak to pull ahead 16-10. UMass Lowell rallied to tie the set at 18-18 and 21-21 before the Bears won four of the frame's final six points to take the set, 25-23. Ehlert posted three kills and four block assists in the stanza.

Brown gained a 14-11 advantage midway through set two prior to outscoring UMass Lowell 11-1 over the remainder of the set for a 25-12 set win. Stillwell terminated on five kills in the frame, and Winkler tacked on six digs and two aces.

In set three, Brown used a 5-0 run to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 10-8 lead. A 4-0 spurt later in the frame boosted the Bears to a 20-12 edge as Brown closed out a 25-17 set victory. Grover landed five kills, and Sellers dished out 11 assists in the period.

For UMass Lowell, Lindsey Visvardis notched 18 digs, McKenna Bova handed out 14 assists, and Kate Bilyeu had six kills.

Match 2: Providence 3, Brown 1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 29-27)

Senior Sabrina Stillwell, junior Makena Ehlert, and freshman Kristin Sellers all posted double-doubles, but Brown fell to Providence, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 29-27), on Saturday night in its second and final match of the day.

The Bears took the first set and nearly won set two before the host Friars came back to win the second frame and earned victories in sets two through four via the smallest possible margins, including a win in extra points in set four.

Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) totaled a match-best 19 kills with 17 digs for her second double-double of the weekend and her career. Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) posted 11 kills and 14 digs for her first double-double of the season and the ninth of her career.

Freshman setter Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered team highs in assists (38), digs (18), and service aces (four) for her second double-double of the day.

Senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) and freshman Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) each tallied 15 digs while sophomore Tylin Stiller (Evergreen, Colo.) added eight kills on .368 hitting.

Trailing 19-16 in set one, the Bears used a 4-1 spurt to knot the score at 20-20. The set remained tied at 22-22 before Brown won the frame's final three points to take a 25-22 win. Stillwell (seven) and Ehlert (five) combined for 12 kills in the frame on .400 and .500 hitting respectively.

With set two tied at 13-13, Brown scored six straight points to pull ahead 19-13. The Bears increased their margin to 23-16 before the Friars won the frame's final nine points to claim the set 25-23 and tie the match at one set apiece.

Neither side held a lead larger than three points in set three as Providence pulled out another 25-23 win to go up 2-1 in sets. Facing set point at 24-21, Brown won back-to-back points before PC closed the period. Stillwell terminated on six kills in the frame alongside four digs.

Brown used a 5-1 run in set four to turn a 16-13 deficit into an 18-17 lead. From there, the score was tied seven times, including as Brown rallied to take three straight points and tie the score at 24-24. The visitors gained set point at 25-24, 26-25, and 27-26 before the hosts tallied the set's final three points to emerge with a 29-27 set victory. Overall, the set witnessed 11 ties and seven lead changes.

For Providence, Lindsey Schaible and Addison Root each landed 14 kills, Allison Barber dished out a match-best 49 assists, and Mackenzie Taylor came up with a match-high 24 digs.
