
No. 7 Seed Women's Water Polo Drops 9-4 Decision to No. 5 Bucknell at CWPAs

LEWISBURG, Pa. – No. 7 seed Brown University women's water polo dropped a 9-4 decision to No. 5 seed Bucknell University in the fifth-place game of the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship on Sunday morning at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
The Bears (16-18) remained within 3-1 with just over a minute to play in the first half before the host Bison (16-18) pulled ahead 5-1 at the break and did not allow the visitors to come any closer in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 13 saves, posting her 12th double-digit save performance of the season. She stopped double-figure shots in all three games at the tournament, concluding the weekend with 38 total saves. Dakan became Brown's all-time leader in saves with 1,131 career stops.
Senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted a goal and two ejections drawn while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) tallied a goal and three steals. Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) registered a goal and two steals, and freshman Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) netted one goal.
Junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) contributed two steals and three ejections drawn while junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and freshman Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) made two steals apiece.
Both Dakan and Heilman earned Second Team CWPA All-Tournament Team honors.
After the Bison scored the game's first goal, Brown responded 22 seconds later as Rosas tied the score at 1-1. Bucknell netted the opening stanza's other two goals to pull ahead 3-1 after one.
Following 6:54 of scoreless play to open the second quarter, Bucknell scored twice in the period's final 66 seconds to take a 5-1 edge at halftime.
Atwell answered a Bison goal to keep Brown within 6-2 with 5:51 left in the third quarter prior to the hosts netting three straight goals to gain a 9-2 advantage with 5:51 to play in the contest.
Hughes and Heilman converted the game's final two goals, netting tallies at the 5:36 and 2:18 marks of the fourth frame respectively.
Entering the tournament as the No. 7 seed, Brown out-performed its seeding for the first time since 2015 with its sixth-place finish at this year's championship.
