
Brown's Late Rally Falls Short, Bears Fall To UMass, 14-12

Providence, R.I. - Brown's rally from an eight goal second quarter deficit came up short, as the Bears fell to UMass, 14-12, at Stevenson-Pincince Field in the 51st meeting between the two New England rivals. Brown falls to 3-4 overall, while UMass improves to 5-4.
The Bears were paced by senior Stephen Hudak (Rydal, PA), who scored a season high four goals, including three in the second half. Sophomore Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) netted three goals and handed out an assist, while junior Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA) added two goals and an assist for the Bears.
Brown sophomore goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made 10 of his 18 saves in the second half, while Minutemen goalie Hampton Brannon registered 15 saves.
Jeff Trainor paced the Minutemen with four goals, while Chris Connolly and Buddy Carr had two goals each.
UMass had a 50-43 shot advantage over the Bears, while Brown had the edge in ground balls, 36-34. Bears' senior Ted Ottens (Wilton, CT) won 10-of-20 face-offs, while freshman Matt McShea (Winnetka, IL) came through by winning 6-of-9 face-offs for the Bears.
UMass built a 6-2 first quarter advantage and extended its lead to 10-2 on a man-up goal by Trainor with 6:28 left in the second quarter.
Goals by Bears' junior Carson Song (Charlotte, NC) and Hudak cut the UMass lead to 10-4 at the half. Panepinto and Hudak kept up the pressure and closed the Minutemen lead to 10-6 with 12:32 left in the third quarter.
The Minutemen scored three of the next four goals for a 13-7 advantage on Connolly's goal at 4:10 of the third quarter.
Brown got back in the game once again on a goal by McCaleb and two goals by Hudak to trail 13-10, early in the fourth quarter.
Trainor added a goal for UMass for a 14-10 lead and McCaleb and junior Brian Prigmore (Vancouver, WA) closed the scoring for the Bears, with the last goal at 1:25 remaining.
The Ivy League season heats up next Saturday, March 31, when Brown hosts Princeton at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Face off is 1:00 pm on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Network.
