
Bears Host UMass In 51st Renewal Of New England Lacrosse Rivalry

Providence, R.I. – Brown and UMass, the two most storied lacrosse programs in the New England region with a combined 33 NCAA Tournament appearances, will face-off on Saturday, March 24, at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Face-off is 12 noon in a game televised live on NESNplus and the Ivy League Network with Mike Rubin calling the play and Mike Mancuso providing the commentary.
Brown Lacrosse Partners With Clothes To Kids RI: Brown men's lacrosse has partnered with Clothes To Kids RI to make an impact in our local community. The mission of this wonderful organization is to build children's self-esteem by providing them with clothing that makes them feel great about themselves. Brown team members have solicited local businesses for donations, set up drop boxes within the Brown community, and will also have drop boxes at Saturday's game vs. UMass.
The Bears: Brown evened its record at 3-3 with a 19-8 victory over Holy Cross Tuesday evening in Worcester. Luke McCaleb '20 led the Bears with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists), while Carson Song '19 and Michael Panepinto '19 posted five points each (3 goals, 2 assists) against the Crusaders.
The Minutemen: UMass (4-4) is riding a three-game winning streak following a 17-13 win over Hartford last Saturday. The Minutemen have also earned wins over Sacred Heart (13-9), NJIT (17-3), and UMass Lowell (13-6), with losses to #16 Army (18-6), Harvard (16-11), #11 Yale (13-10) and #1 Albany (19-8).
Brown-UMass – Series Record: The Brown and UMass have met 50 times, dating back to 1963, with the Bears holding a 28-22 series advantage over the Minutemen. Brown has won the last three meetings, including a 10-9 overtime decision last year in Amherst on Jack Kniffin's overtime goal from Luke McCaleb. The Minutemen last defeated the Bears in 2014, coming away with a 15-2 decision in Providence.

McCaleb On Attack: Sophomore attackman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD), Brown's leading scorer with 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists), paced the Bears in their win over Holy Cross with four goals and three assists. McCaleb had a goal and three assists in Brown's Ivy opener vs. Harvard. He scored three goals and handed out two assists in Brown's win over #4 Villanova. He had four goals and an assist in Brown's win over Stony Brook and added two goals and an assist vs. #15 Rutgers. McCaleb's 49 points last year were second on the Brown team and second all-time for a freshman at Brown, trailing only David Evans, who scored 53 points as a first-year player in 1993.
Ottens Facing-Off: Brown has one of the elite face-off men in the nation with the return of Second Team All-Ivy Ted Ottens '18 (Wilton, CT). He captured 12-of-19 face-offs in Brown's win over Holy Cross. Ottens won 14-of-23 face-offs in Brown's victory over #4 Villanova, while picking up nine ground balls, and won 14-of-23 face-offs vs. Harvard. He won 18-of-24 face-offs vs. Stony Brook, including 12 of the game's first 15 face-offs. Last year, Ottens captured 270-of-452 face-offs (.597) and scored seven goals off the face-off x.
Goss One Of The Nation's Top Goalies: Goalie Phil Goss '20 (San Francisco, CA), who led the nation in saves (12.75 saves per game) in his rookie campaign, ranks fourth nationally with 13.0 saves per game. He had 11 saves in Brown's win over Holy Cross. Goss was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after Brown's 12-9 win over #4 Villanova, making 11 of his 17 saves in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter. He made 11 saves in Brown's opening game vs. Quinnipiac and added 10 more against Stony Brook. Goss exceled against #15 Rutgers with a season high 20 saves. Last year, he turned in several virtuoso performances with 20 saves in Brown's Ivy League Tournament win over Princeton and 19 saves against Rutgers and Penn.
Miller On The Wing:. Senior LSM Jake Miller (Heartland, WI) has started to find his stride and netted his fifth goal of the year in Brown's win over Holy Cross. He scored two goals, handed out an assist and picked up three ground balls in Brown's win over #4 Villanova. Miller also added a goal against Harvard. Brown's team leader among field players with 21 ground balls, Miller is one of the top-scoring LSM in NCAA history, posting 26 career points, with 18 goals and eight assists.

Song 2nd In Brown Scoring: Junior middy Carson Song (San Francisco, CA), Brown's second leading scorer with 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists), netted three goals and handed out two assists in Brown's win over Holy Cross. Song scored a goal and handed out four assists vs. Harvard. He registered five goals and two assists in Brown's win over Stony Brook. Song added a goal and an assist against #15 Rutgers.
All-Ivy Returnees: Brown returns three All-Ivy players from a year ago: Second Team All-Ivy face-off specialist Ted Ottens '18 (Wilton, CT), Honorable Mention All-Ivy middy Stephen Hudak '18 (Rydal, PA) and Honorable Mention All-Ivy defenseman JJ Ntshaykolo '18 (San Francisco, CA).
Hudak In The Midfield: Senior middy Stephen Hudak (Rydal, PA), an All-Ivy and All-New England selection a year ago, scored a goal and handed out an assist in games against Quinnipiac and Holy Cross. He added two goals vs. Stony Brook. Last year, Hudak was Brown's leading scorer from the midfield with 34 goals and nine assists for 43 points. He netted goals in 15 of 16 games and scored a career high five goals in Brown's Ivy Tournament win over Princeton.
Kniffin Excels: Sophomore attackman Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) scored two goals against Quinnipiac and distributed three assists vs. Stony Brook. He added a goal vs. Holy Cross and #15 Rutgers. Kniffin had 22 goals a year ago in his rookie season.
Panepinto Finds The Back of the Net: Middy Michael Panepinto '19 (Needham, MA), Brown's leading goal scorer with 14 goals, scored three goals and handed out two assists in Brown's win over Holy Cross. He had two goals vs. Harvard and netted two goals in Brown's win over #4 Villanova. Panepinto opened the season with two goals and two assists vs. Quinnipiac, and came back with three goals and one assist vs. Stony Brook. He had two goals and an assist vs. #15 Rutgers. Panepinto has been a mainstay of the Bears' midfield since his freshman season and is Brown's fourth leading returning scorer with 28 points (25 goals, 3 assists). Last year, he netted goals in 15-of-16 games and registered hat-tricks vs. Stony Brook and Princeton.
Head Coach Mike Daly: Second-year head Brown lacrosse coach Mike Daly posted a 10-6 overall record in his initial season on College Hill and brought the Bears to the Ivy League Tournament championship game. He came to Brown after guiding the Tufts University men's lacrosse program to three NCAA National Championship titles while boasting the nation's highest scoring offense. Daly, the sixth Brown men's lacrosse coach since 1963, posted a record of 244-83 in 18 seasons as head coach at Tufts, with nine NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NESCAC titles. His Tufts teams won national championships in 2010, 2014 and 2015. Tufts led the nation in scoring in 2016 with 402 goals in 23 games for a 17.48 per game average. The Jumbos won their seventh consecutive NESCAC title and finished the year with a 20-3 record, falling in the National Championship game. Daly is among the top 10 active coaches for winning percentage and is in the top 20 for victories. A two time USILA F. Morris Touchstone National Coach of the Year (2010 and 2014), Daly's teams have won 20 or more games four times and made five appearances in the National Championship game. Daly oversaw a prolific Tufts offense that scored 423 goals in 2014 to set an NCAA record for a single season for all divisions.
Defensive Front: JJ Ntshaykolo '18 (San Francisco, CA), an All-Ivy selection, Max Gustafson '18 (Sherborn, MA), Alex Santangelo '19 (Medfield, MA) and LSM Jake Miller '18 (Heartland, WI) return in the defensive half of the field.

Ivy League Tournament: The four-team 2018 Ivy League Men's Lacrosse Tournament will be located at a neutral site, Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium on the campus of Columbia University, with the semifinals on Friday, May 4, and the finals on Sunday, May 6.
