
Ivy Opener For Men's Lacrosse On Saturday At Harvard

Providence, R.I. – Brown’s men’s lacrosse team, fresh off a win over #4 Villanova, opens its Ivy League schedule on Saturday, March 17, traveling to Boston, Mass., to battle Harvard at Jordan Field. The 1:00 pm game will be telecast on NESNplus and the Ivy League Network.
The Bears: Brown (2-2) is coming off a 12-9 come-from-behind win over #4 Villanova on March 6 behind three goals and two assists by Luke McCaleb ’20, and a 17 save performance by goalie Phil Goss ’20, who was named the Ivy League’s Player of the Week. The Bears also got a lift from Levi McCrady ‘20, who had two third quarter goals against the Wildcats.
The Crimson: Harvard earned an 11-8 decision over Providence last Saturday to extend its record to 4-1 overall. The Crimson have also earned wins over UMass Lowell (10-9), UMass (16-11) and Hartford (14-10), with its lone loss to Holy Cross (10-9 2ot).
Brown-Harvard – Series Record: The Bears and Crimson have met 68 times, dating back to 1926, with the series tied, 34-34. Last year, Brown came away with a 13-8 victory over Harvard behind Stephen Hudak’s three goals. Harvard’s last win over the Bears was a 13-12 decision in the 2016 Ivy League Tournament.
McCaleb On Attack: Sophomore attackman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD), Brown’s top scorer with 14 points (9 goals, 5 assists), scored three goals and handed out two assists in Brown’s win over #4 Villanova. He had four goals and an assist in Brown’s win over Stony Brook and added two goals and an assist vs. #15 Rutgers. McCaleb’s 49 points last year were second on the Brown team and second all-time for a freshman at Brown, trailing only David Evans, who scored 53 points as a first-year player in 1993.
Ottens Facing-Off: Brown has one of the elite face-off men in the nation with the return of Second Team All-Ivy Ted Ottens ’18 (Wilton, CT). Ottens won 14-of-23 face-offs in Brown’s win over #4 Villanova, while picking up nine ground balls. He won 18-of-24 face-offs vs. Stony Brook, including 12 of the game’s first 15 face-offs. Last year, Ottens captured 270-of-452 face-offs (.597) and scored seven goals off the face-off x.
Goss Leads Nation In Saves…Again: Goalie Phil Goss ’20 (San Francisco, CA), who led the nation in saves (12.75 saves per game) in his rookie campaign, is number one in the country once again with 14.5 saves per game. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after Brown’s 12-9 win over #4 Villanova, making 11 of his 17 saves in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter. Goss made 11 saves in Brown’s opening game vs. Quinnipiac and added 10 more against Stony Brook. He exceled against #15 Rutgers with a season high 20 saves. Last year, he turned in several virtuoso performances with 20 saves in Brown’s Ivy League Tournament win over Princeton and 19 saves against Rutgers and Penn.
Miller On The Wing:. Senior LSM Jake Miller (Heartland, WI) has started to find his stride, scoring two goals, handing out an assist and picking up three ground balls in Brown’s win over #4 Villanova. Miller is one of the top LSM in the nation, posting 24 career points, with 16 goals and eight assists.

Song Steps Up: Junior middy Carson Song (San Francisco, CA) registered five goals and two assists in Brown’s win over Stony Brook. Song added a goal and an assist against #15 Rutgers. He ranks second on the Brown team in scoring with 13 points (9 goals, 4 assists).
All-Ivy Returnees: Brown returns three All-Ivy players from a year ago: Second Team All-Ivy face-off specialist Ted Ottens ’18 (Wilton, CT), Honorable Mention All-Ivy middy Stephen Hudak ‘18 (Rydal, PA) and Honorable Mention All-Ivy defenseman JJ Ntshaykolo ‘18 (San Francisco, CA).
Hudak Leads Bears’ Midfield: Senior middy Stephen Hudak (Rydal, PA), an All-Ivy and All-New England selection a year ago, scored a goal and handed out an assist in Brown’s opener against Quinnipiac and added two goals vs. Stony Brook. Last year, Hudak was Brown’s leading scorer from the midfield with 34 goals and nine assists for 43 points. He netted goals in 15 of 16 games and scored a career high five goals in Brown’s Ivy Tournament win over Princeton.
Kniffin Excels: Sophomore attackman Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) scored two goals against Quinnipiac and distributed three assists vs. Stony Brook. Kniffin also added a goal against #15 Rutgers. He had 22 goals a year ago.
Panepinto Finds The Back of the Net: Middy Michael Panepinto ‘19 (Needham, MA), Brown’s second leading scorer with 13 points (9 goals, 4 assists), had two goals in Brown’s win over #4 Villanova. He opened the season with two goals and two assists vs. Quinnipiac, and came back with three goals and one assist vs. Stony Brook. Panepinto had two goals and an assist vs. #15 Rutgers. He has been a mainstay of the Bears’ midfield since his freshman season and is Brown’s fourth leading returning scorer with 28 points (25 goals, 3 assists). Last year, he netted goals in 15-of-16 games and registered hat-tricks vs. Stony Brook and Princeton.
Head Coach Mike Daly: Second-year head Brown lacrosse coach Mike Daly posted a 10-6 overall record in his initial season on College Hill and brought the Bears to the Ivy League Tournament championship game. He came to Brown after guiding the Tufts University men’s lacrosse program to three NCAA National Championship titles while boasting the nation’s highest scoring offense. Daly, the sixth Brown men’s lacrosse coach since 1963, posted a record of 244-83 in 18 seasons as head coach at Tufts, with nine NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NESCAC titles. His Tufts teams won national championships in 2010, 2014 and 2015. Tufts led the nation in scoring in 2016 with 402 goals in 23 games for a 17.48 per game average. The Jumbos won their seventh consecutive NESCAC title and finished the year with a 20-3 record, falling in the National Championship game. Daly is among the top 10 active coaches for winning percentage and is in the top 20 for victories. A two time USILA F. Morris Touchstone National Coach of the Year (2010 and 2014), Daly’s teams have won 20 or more games four times and made five appearances in the National Championship game. Daly oversaw a prolific Tufts offense that scored 423 goals in 2014 to set an NCAA record for a single season for all divisions.
Defensive Front: JJ Ntshaykolo ’18 (san Francisco, CA), an All-Ivy selection, Max Gustafson ’18 (Sherborn, MA), Alex Santangelo ’19 (Medfield, MA) and LSM Jake Miller ’18(Heartland, WI) return in the defensive half of the field.
