
Women's Water Polo Drops Decisions to No. 9 Michigan, No. 13 Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Brown University women's water polo dropped a 16-5 decision to No. 9 University of Michigan and a 15-9 decision to No. 13 Hartwick College in a pair of games at Hartwick's Moyer Pool on Saturday.
The Bears (5-8) pulled within two goals of the host Hawks (16-3) in the second half in their second contest of the day after falling to the Wolverines (16-7) in their first game.
Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted a hat trick against Michigan while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) totaled three goals on the day. Senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and freshman Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) each scored twice against Hartwick, and freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) totaled two goals between the two games.
Next, Brown concludes play at Hartwick tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 11, at 11:30 a.m. against No. 17 Princeton.
Game 1 – No. 9 Michigan 16, Brown 5
Junior Carmen Rosas scored three goals as Brown fell to No. 9 Michigan, 16-5, in its first game of the day on Saturday afternoon at Hartwick.
The Bears remained within 4-1 at the end of the first quarter before the Wolverines gained a 9-1 edge at halftime and a 13-3 advantage through the end of three quarters.
Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) added three steals and two ejections drawn to her hat trick while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) posted a goal and two steals, and freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) tallied a goal, an assist, and a steal.
Junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) registered three steals and two ejections drawn, freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) notched an assist, a steal, and a field block, and senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) contributed an assist and an ejection drawn.
Senior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 11 saves with a steal.
After the Wolverines opened the game with a 4-0 lead, Atwell scored to cut the margin to 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. Michigan scored all five of the second quarter's goals to take a 9-1 lead at the break.
Rosas started the third quarter's scoring to bring Brown within 9-2 before Michigan pulled ahead 12-2. A goal from Cook kept the Bears within 13-3 at the end of the third quarter. Rosas netted both of the Bears' tallies in the final frame.

Game 2 – No. 13 Hartwick 15, Brown 9
Senior Jessica Heilman, sophomore Lexi Atwell, and freshman Riley Hughes each scored two goals, but Brown fell to No. 13 Hartwick, 15-9, on Saturday night in its second game of the day.
The Bears remained within 8-6 of the hosts early in the third quarter before the Hawks used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 14-6 early in the fourth frame.
Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tacked on three steals and two ejections drawn to her two goals while Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) added three steals to her pair of tallies. Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) chipped in a steal alongside her two goals.
Freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) tallied a goal, an assist, two steals, and an ejection drawn. Junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) totaled a goal, a steal, and an ejection drawn.
Brown compiled 17 steals as a team with freshman Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) coming up with three thefts. Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) registered two steals, three ejections drawn, and a field block.
In the cage, senior net-minder Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped eight shots with a steal.
After Hartwick netted the game's first goal, Brown went on a 3-0 run to take a 3-1 lead late in the first quarter. Atwell started the streak with a goal from the left wing before Miller converted a 5-meter penalty shot and Heilman scored on a lob shot. The Bears remained ahead 3-2 at the close of the first stanza.
The Hawks used a 4-0 stretch to pull ahead 5-3. Brown answered with back-to-back goals from Hughes and Heilman to knot the score at 5-5. Hartwick notched the last three goals of the frame to gain an 8-5 halftime lead.
Perez cut Brown's deficit to 8-6 just over a minute into the third quarter with a goal from the right wing. The Hawks proceeded to score the game's next six goals, taking a 12-6 edge at the end of the third quarter and extending the margin to 14-6 early in the fourth quarter.
Consecutive goals from Atwell and Cook made the score 14-8, and Hughes netted the contest's final tally off of a rebound.
