
No. 25 Women's Water Polo Tops Villanova, Tests No. 13 San Diego State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 25 Brown University women's water polo topped Villanova University, 12-9, and fell to No. 13 San Diego State University in overtime, 5-4, on the third and final day of the Bruno Classic on Sunday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Bears (2-4) used a 6-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to gain separation from the Wildcats (0-3) in their first game of the day before dropping an overtime decision to the Aztecs (2-2) in their sixth contest of the weekend.
Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) and sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) each scored five goals on the day while senior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) totaled 22 saves between the two games.
Next, Brown plays in the Marist Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 25 with games against Marist (9:30 a.m.), Iona (1:00 p.m.), and Siena (4:00 p.m.).
Game 1 – No. 25 Brown 12, Villanova 9
Sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) scored four goals, junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted three goals, and No. 25 Brown bested Villanova, 12-9, on Sunday morning in its first game of the day and fifth contest of the tournament.
The Bears used a 6-0 run spanning the second and third quarters, turning a 3-2 deficit in the second quarter into an 8-3 lead in the third stanza. Brown maintained at least a three-goal edge for the duration.
Alongside, Atwell and Rosas, senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied two goals and two steals while freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) compiled a goal and two assists.
Freshmen Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) each netted one goal, and junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) drew a team-high six ejections.
In the cage, senior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped nine shots.
After Villanova opened the game with a 1-0 lead, Perez and Cook responded, giving Brown a 2-1 edge at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats gained a 3-2 advantage in the second stanza, but the Bears scored the last three goals of the half to grab a 5-3 edge at halftime. Rosas started the run with back-to-back goals before Atwell found the back of the net.
Brown opened the second half with three straight goals, completing a 6-0 run and taking an 8-3 edge with 2:50 left in the third quarter. Rosas, Atwell, and Heilman scored in order to begin the second half. Keck converted in between a pair of Wildcat markers as Brown led 9-5 through three quarters.
Atwell scored twice in the fourth quarter, and Heilman added a tally with 3:04 remaining to insure the win.

Senior net-minder Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) recorded 13 saves, but No. 25 Brown fell to No. 13 San Diego State in overtime, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon in its sixth and final game of the Bruno Classic.
The Bears took a 4-3 lead early in the third quarter, but the Aztecs tied the game in regulation and scored the only goal of the two overtime sessions to pull out the win.
Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted two goals while senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered a goal, three steals, and two ejections drawn.
Junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) posted two assists, two steals, and three ejections drawn, and sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) scored once.
Rosas and Atwell started the contest's scoring, staking Brown to a 2-0 lead at the 3:35 mark of the first quarter. SDSU scored with 50 seconds left in the opening frame to pull within 2-1.
The Aztecs netted the second quarter's first two goals to pull ahead 3-2 with 4:30 left until halftime. A goal from Heilman sent the game to the break knotted at 3-3.
After no scoring occurred in the third quarter, Rosas pushed the Bears ahead 4-3 with 6:39 to go in regulation. SDSU forced overtime on a goal with 2:44 remaining in the fourth quarter and notched the only tally in the bonus periods.
