
Women's Lacrosse Overpowers Holy Cross, 17-6

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 17-6, on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Kuzniewski Field. The Bears improve to 2-0 on the season while the Crusaders fall to 0-3.
Brown jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind four goals by sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.), two of them free-position shots, two goals from freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) and a tally by freshman Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.), her first collegiate score.
Holy Cross got on the board at 14:26 with a score from Riley Bergholtz. DeGennaro next tallied her fifth goal at 11:24 on a free-position and man-up goal. Bergholtz recorded her second of the contest and Keeley Connors made it two in a row for the Crusaders.
Junior Grace Plassche (Clinton, N.J.) concluded Brown's scoring in the first at 5:26 and Kerianne Moran brought the game to its halftime score of 9-4 at 2:47 on a free position goal.
The Bears dominated shots for the opening period, outshooting the Crusaders 25-8. Brown also had a commanding lead in draw controls as well at 13-1. Clears for the half ended with the Bears going 7-for-8 while the Crusaders were 8-for-11.
Brown opened the second with four-straight goals which included two from freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) to increase its advantage to 13-4 with 22:39 remaining.
Holy Cross and Brown traded scores at 19:31 (Moran) and 17:09 (Mosenthal) to move the score to 14-5. The Crusaders concluded their scoring at 10:31 and the Bears wrapped up the game with three scores, the first from senior Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.) (7:50) followed by senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) (4:05 - UP) and Warble (2:05).
Brown finished the second with an 8-3 lead in draw controls and an 18-6 advantage in shots. The Bears also went 12-for-13 in clears, improving to 19-21 for the contest.
DeGennaro led the offense with seven points on five goals and two assists. Warble (3G, 2A), junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (4A), Mosenthal (3G), Fowler (2G, 1A) and junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (1G, 1A) finished with multi-point games for the Bears.
Senior Marissa Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the team in ground balls with four while Verni and senior Bri Irons (Wallingford, Pa.) had a squad-best three caused turnovers. Warble and sophomore Emily Fryer (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) led the Bears in draw controls with eight on the night.
In net, sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) made on save in 53:36 minutes of action while senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) had one save in 6:24 of play. Julia Maloney made 12 saves in the Holy Cross goal.
The Bears will next play in their second-straight away game and compete at No. 5 Boston College on Saturday, Feb. 24 for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
