
Women's Lacrosse Suffers 22-12 Setback at No. 5/3 Boston College

NEWTON, Mass. – A strong second half by No. 5/3 Boston College handed the Brown women's lacrosse team its first loss of the season in a 22-12 decision on Saturday at Newton Campus Lacrosse Field. The Bears held the lead for most of the opening half and trailed by just one (7-6) at halftime. It was the second half where the Eagles would pull away, outscoring Brown, 15-6.
Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) led Brown with four goals on the day while junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) added two goals and one assist.
Boston College (5-0) opened the game with two-straight goals, the first from Cara Urbank at 26:12 on a free-position shot and the second from Sam Apuzzo at 25:24.
Brown (2-1) countered with five straight of its own to take a 5-2 advantage. Moinuddin got the Bears started at 24:14 and Mosenthal followed with two at 23:36 and 19:12. Freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) ended the run at 16:41 and 15:34 (free position), respectively.
Kaileen Hart next scored a player-up tally at 14:44 and Apuzzo generated her second of the contest at 11:45 to pull BC within one, 5-4, but Brown would soon increase its lead to two with DeGennaro's second on an assist from junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), her second helper of the afternoon.
The Eagles would close the half with three straight, two from Jordan Lappin, to take a 7-6 edge into the break. Boston College held the lead in shots (18-13) and draw controls (10-4) for the period. Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) made five saves between the pipes while Lauren Daly had four stops for the Eagles.
Boston College jumped out to a 10-6 lead with the help of three goals to open the second. Brown later fought within one (10-9) when freshman Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) started a three-goal run at 22:04. Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) (20:50) and Moinuddin (20:11) put in the other scores in the sequence.
The Eagles would go back up by three with scores 19 seconds apart at 17:42 (Apuzzo) 17:23 (Hart). Warble would next notch her second of the game at 15:18 to make it 12-10, BC.
Boston College would then take control and hold a 16-11 lead midway through the stanza. Mosenthal would score her final score at 9:51 but the Eagles would shut the door on any further Brown chances and score six straight, the last three on free-position shots, for their 22-12 victory.
The Eagles held a 22-10 shot differential in the second and a 14-8 lead in draw controls. Sophomore Emily Fryer (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) concluded the contest with five draw controls and also had three ground balls and one caused turnover for the Bears. The Boston College offense was led by Hart with 10 points (5G, 5A) while Hart (5G, 3A) while Dempsey Arsenault (5G, 2A) also had strong games.
Overall, BC was 6-for-9 on free-position shots while Brown was 2-for-3. Bigelow finished the game with a season-high eight saves while Daly ended with seven.
The Bears will next play in their first Ivy League contest on Saturday, March 3 when they host No. 9/12 Princeton at Stevenson-Pincince Field for a 1:00 p.m. contest on the Ivy League Network.
