
Women's Lacrosse Topples Quinnipiac, 18-7, To Open Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team showcased its offense to open the 2018 season and defeated Quinnipiac 18-7 on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears cruised to a 12-3 halftime lead and controlled the second for the victory.
The Bears (1-0) opened the game firing on all cylinders and jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) led the charge with four of the seven scores (three free position goals), which included the first two.
Quinnipiac (0-1) got on the board at 16:21 and scored two-straight to pull within five (7-2). Brown then went on its second run of the afternoon, this time registering five tallies, the first from junior Grace Plassche (Clinton, N.J.) at 12:06 while sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) put in two in the sequence.
The Bobcats closed the half with a goal from Emily Byrne just before time expired as the Bears took a 12-3 advantage into the break. Brown carried the shot lead for the first at 21-10. The Bears were also 3-of-7 on free-position shots and shutout the Bobcats (0-for-2). Brown doubled up Quinnipiac on draw controls (10-5) and was a perfect 12-for-12 on clears.
Mosenthal didn't skip a beat in the second half and opened with a score at 28:52, her fifth of the day. Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) and freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) made it a 15-3 Bear lead at 26:02 (free position) and 23:03, respectively.
Byrne halted Brown's three-goal run for Quinnipiac at 19:58 and Ashley Bobinski notched a score (12:46) to bring the game to 15-5. Paletta next added her third of the game (11:21) and senior Hannah Langmuir (Providence, R.I.) got in the scoring column at 8:58. Mosenthal closed out the three-goal spurt at 8:45, giving the Bears an 18-5 advantage.
Bobinski and Byrne tallied the last two goals of the game for Quinnipiac at 2:21 and 0:38, respectively, to bring the contest to its conclusion of 18-7.
The Bears outshot the Bobcats 18-6 in the second and 39-16 overall. Brown was 1-of-3 on free-position shots in the frame, 4-for-10 overall, while Quinnipiac was 1-for-2 and 1-for- 4 on the day. The Bears were 3-for-4 on clears for the half and an impressive 15-of-16 combined.
For scoring, Paletta (3G, 3A) and Mosenthal (6G) paced Brown with six points. Junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) added four points on an even two goals and two assists while DeGennaro (2G, 1A), Fowler (2G) also had multi-point games. Boston College transfer, junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.), netted her first score as a Bear and added an assist.
Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) played all 60 minutes in goal and made five saves while Kyle Larken and Allie Kelsey split time for Quinnipiac and tallied five and one save, respectively.
The Bears next play in back-to-back away games starting with Holy Cross on Wednesday, Feb. 21 and will then travel to Boston College on Saturday, Feb. 24. The contest against the Crusaders starts at 5:00 p.m. while the match-up against the Eagles will begin at 12:00 p.m.
