
Steeves Posts Double-Double, Women's Basketball Falls to Dartmouth, 77-60

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior forward Erika Steeves posted a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore guard Justine Gaziano scored 20 points, but Brown University women's basketball fell to Dartmouth College, 77-60, on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (14-9, 2-8 Ivy) led 22-19 at the end of the first quarter before the visiting Big Green (14-9, 6-4 Ivy) took a 46-31 halftime edge and did not allow the hosts to trim the margin below six points in the second half.
Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) tallied her sixth double-double of the season and the 15th of her career, while making 6-of-11 shots from the field and adding three assists.
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) reached the 20-point plateau for the 10th time this season and the 16th time in her career, netting a trio of 3-pointers as part of her team-high 20 points.
Freshman guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) totaled 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting with five rebounds and four assists. She has scored in double-figures in each of her last three games and averaged 18.0 points per game on the weekend.
Junior guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, and four steals. She moved into 11th place on Brown's career scoring list with 1,210 career points, passing Krista Butterfield '89.
With two blocks, senior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) now has 70 blocks on the season, tying for third on Brown's single-season blocks list. She now has 195 career blocks, moving into 10th place in Ivy League history.
Dartmouth's Kate Letkewicz led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 treys. Emily Slagle netted 15 points, and Cy Lippold added 10 points and five assists.
For the game, Dartmouth shot 12-of-26 (46.2 percent) from 3-point distance. In the first half, the Big Green connected on 19-of-32 field goals (59.4 percent) and 8-of-14 triples (57.1 percent). The visitors held the hosts to 35.2-percent shooting from the field and 17.9-pecent shooting from behind the arc.
As part of the Bears' "Think Pink" game, Brown honored the mother of freshman forward Morgan Clausen (Algonquin, Ill.), Sandi Clausen, who has twice overcome cancer, and after being diagnosed for a second time last year, has been in remission since the fall.
In the first quarter, neither team held a lead larger than four points as Brown led 22-19 at the end of one. Gaziano scored eight early points to give Brown a 12-9 edge at the midway point of the frame. Steeves scored the Bears' next six points before a layup from Leonidas gave the Bears a three-point lead at the end of the quarter.
Baskets from Leonidas and Gaziano helped keep Brown within 31-29 of Dartmouth at the 5:21 mark of the second quarter before the Big Green closed the half on a 15-2 run to gain a 46-31 advantage. Dartmouth netted the quarter's last 10 points.
Gaziano and Steeves both hit 3-pointers to spark an 11-2 run that brought Brown within 54-48 of Dartmouth with 1:46 to go in the third quarter. A layup from freshman guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) and wing 3-pointer from Mehta capped the run. The Big Green maintained a 59-49 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Leonidas scored five of Brown's first seven points in the fourth quarter to keep the Bears' deficit at 68-56 with 5:40 to go. The Big Green then went ahead 74-56, finishing a 15-5 run. Gaziano and Clausen both scored for the Bears inside of the final three minutes.
Next, Brown hosts Columbia on Friday, Feb. 23 at 6:00 p.m. (ESPN3/ILN) and Cornell on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4:00 p.m. (myRITV/ILN) in its final regular season home games at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
