Providence, R.I. – Brown sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Brown to a 71-69 win over Stony Brook at the Pizzitola Sports Center, snapping the Seawolves' five game winning streak.
Brown heads into its 14-day break for final exams with a 7-4 record, while Stony Brook lost for the second time this season and first time on the road, falling to 8-2 overall.
"I'm proud of our team and the way we competed, earning a really good win over a quality opponent," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We found a way to make enough plays to win the game. I liked our effort for the full 40 minutes and we out-rebounded one of the best rebounding teams in the nation."
Two Stony Brook players fouled out in the game that had 50 fouls called. Brown out-rebounded Stony Brook by a 46-31 margin, led by Choh's 12 rebounds.
Brown led for nearly 25 minutes, but the game tightened in the last two minutes.
A seven point Brown lead with 1:58 remaining dwindled to two points, 66-64, after a trey by Stony Brook's Miles Latimer with 1:04 left on the clock.
Choh answered with a layup to give the Bears a 68-64 advantage, but Stony Brook battled back and cut the Bears' lead to 68-66 with 19 remaining on a layup by Akwasi Yeboah.
Choh connected on one of two free throws with 17.5 seconds remaining for a 69-66 Brown advantage, but Yeboah converted two free throws with 10.1 seconds left to trail, 69-68.
Bears' sophomore Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN) iced the game by hitting both free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining to give Brown a 71-68 lead.
Leading by three points, Brown's Chris Sullivan fouled Seawolves' guard Jaron Cornish with 1.1 seconds left to put him at the free throw line. Cornish hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second that was rebounded by Cambridge as the final buzzer sounded.
Choh paced four double figure Brown scorers by connecting on 6-of-10 field goals and 8-of-15 free throws in posting his third double-double of the season.
Cambridge, the Ivy League's leader in blocked shots, swatted away a career high five shots, while scoring 16 points. Bears' senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) had 14 points and five rebounds, while junior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) had 10 points and three assists.
"We're trying to be the best defensive team in the Ivy League," said Cambridge. "My teammates trusted that I'll be there to help out and block shots."
Yeboah was in foul trouble throughout, but managed to score 23 points and grab six rebounds for Stony Brook. Anthony Ochefu had 13 points for the Seawolves and Latimer chipped in with 11 points.
Trailing, 19-11, with 12:25 left in the half, Brown went on a 16-4 surge to take control of the half. With the score tied, 23-23, seven straight points by Okolie lifted the Bears to a 30-23 lead with 2:58 remaining.
