PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team claimed first place in the Bruno Invite, finishing the meet with 992 points on Sunday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Princeton came in second with 852 points while Villanova placed third (683).
The night was highlighted by sophomore Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) and the Bears going 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay team closing the invite with a first-place finish.
"This last night was particularly special - I saw a relentless push from our women from the first event to that last relay," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "Winning your own invite is a special thing but doing it with significant points coming from so many different people is a signal of how we develop our team as a whole. We learned a lot this weekend; things we can work on to continue to improve, things that are moving in the right direction with development, and also the things that simply need fine tuning."
To open the night, junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) led Brown in the 1650 freestyle, placing fifth with a time of 17:05.85. Freshman Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) followed in sixth (17:10.39) while freshman Michelle Guo (Falmouth, Mass.) placed eighth (17:18.21).
Junior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) finished third overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.82 and freshman Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) came in seventh (2:00.58). Junior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) grabbed second in 2:00.85 of the B-Final.
Brown impressed in the 100 freestyle, going 1-2-3 in the race. Seaman took first with a time of 49.82, narrowly out-touching junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) who finished in 49.83 for second. Senior Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) finished with a time of 49.90 for third while senior Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) came in second of the B-Final (50.85).
Freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) took third in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.73) while senior Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) came in eighth (2:23.91). Freshman Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) won the B-Final of the event in 2:20.37.
In the 200 butterfly, freshman Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) took fourth in 2:00.54 and was followed by freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) who claimed fifth (2:01.09). Senior Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) placed second in the B-Final with a time of 2:03.22.
Junior Julia Benz (Superior, Colo.) led the Bears on the boards with a fourth-place finish in the 3-meter with a score of 261.30. Freshman Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) (252.30), sophomore Marisa Agarwal (Palo Alto, Calif.) (251.45) and junior Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) (241.00) went 6-7-8, respectively.
Brown capped off the invite by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:18.90. Salesky, Seaman, Prendella and Cross teamed up for the time with Cross again swimming a stellar anchor leg in a relay, this time with a 48.6.
The Bears will be off until 2019 and next travel to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday, Jan. 12 to compete against Harvard and Penn in a tri-meet starting at 12:00 p.m.
