
Women’s Swimming & Diving Defeats Penn, Edged by Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team defeated Penn, 218-82, but fell to host Harvard, 162.50-137.50, in an Ivy League tri-meet at Blodgett Pool on Saturday. Freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) highlighted Brown's performances with two first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 butterfly while four other Bears won events.
"There's a rhythm and mindset that you need to find when it comes to racing other teams," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "Our last meet was about six weeks ago but we were able to get right back into rhythm today. That's something g we need to continue to tap into it to be ready to make moves at Ivies in February."
The meet opened with the Bears and Crimson tying in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.43 with freshman Allyson Ty (North Andover, Mass.), freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.), Wei and sophomore Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) competing for Brown.
Next, junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) was the Bears' top finisher in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:27.33 for sixth place. She was directly followed by freshman Michelle Guo (Falmouth, Mass.) (10:29.36).
Brown went 3-4 and topped Penn in the 200 freestyle with junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) posting the lead time at 1:52.21 and senior Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) recording a 1:52.83.
Junior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) came in second in the 100 backstroke in 57.03 while Ty finished fifth (57.41). Welch grabbed first in the 200 of the event with a time of 2:01.07 and freshman Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) also came in fifth (2:04.47).
For the breaststroke, Lukawski finished second in the 100 (1:05.73) and won the 200 in 2:19.41.
Wei won both the 100 butterfly (55.66) and 200 butterfly (2:02.45). Senior Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) (2:04.12) and freshman Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) (2:05.16) finished 3-4, respectively, in the 200 and both topped Penn. Wittmer climbed one spot in the 100, finishing in 55.70, while Blake-West was in fifth (56.96) and Rippon came in sixth (57.16).
The Bears had a strong showing in the 50 freestyle, with senior Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) winning the event in 23.52 and Seaman placing second (23.84). Junior Jessie Blake-West (Belmont, Mass.) (23.96) and sophomore Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (24.12) also came in fifth and sixth, respectively. Seaman later won the 100 of the freestyle in 50.85 while Cross (51.37) and Salesky (51.39) went 3-4, respectively. Guo was Brown's top finisher in the 500 freestyle (5:05.72).
On the boards, freshman Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) was Brown's top finisher in the 3M in fifth, beating Penn while registering a score of 235. Sophomore Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) (232.20), junior Julia Benz (Superior, Colo.) (227.65) and sophomore Marisa Agarwal (Palo Alto, Calif.) (208.95) finished behind her in spots 6-7-8. Feord led the Bears in the 1M with a mark of 224.95 for fifth place. Benz (215.50, sixth) and Mitchell (208.50, seventh) followed.
Lukawski and freshman Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) went 2-3 in the 200 IM with times of 2:06.13 and 2:06.53, respectively. Sophomore Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) also finished fifth in the event (2:07.29).
Brown closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:23.76 with Seaman, Salesky, Wittmer and Cross combining for the time.
The Bears next compete at Columbia on Friday, Jan. 18 starting at 5:00 p.m.
