
Volleyball Comes Back to Beat Columbia in Five Sets, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Eliza Grover and junior Makena Ehlert both tallied double-doubles, senior Elisa Merten posted 14 total points and 16 digs, and Brown University volleyball came back to beat Columbia University in five sets, 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 25-17, 15-13), on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears (11-12, 4-9 Ivy) rallied from a 2-1 set deficit to clip the visiting Lions (10-13, 4-9 Ivy) for their second straight victory in five sets and third five-set victory in Ivy League play this season.

"I thought we were really efficient in the first set and then lost our way in terms of maintaining in sets two and three," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "We had to find ourselves again, and I think we learned some lessons last weekend when we lost in five to Dartmouth and won in five at Harvard. Those lessons definitely stuck with us and were part of the reason that we were able to fight it out."

Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered 16 kills on .333 hitting and a career-high 11 digs for her first career double-double and her 12th double-figure kill match of the season.

Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) recorded her eighth double-double of the year on 15 kills and a season-high 19 digs. She has posted a double-double in five straight matches and in seven of her last eight outings.

Merten (Woodside, Calif.) filled the stat sheet, compiling her 14 points on eight kills, four service aces, and four block assists, while adding 16 digs and five assists.

Sophomore Tylin Stiller (Evergreen, Colo.) contributed seven kills on .333 hitting with five blocks and four digs while junior Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) finished with six kills on .500 hitting and five blocks. Senior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) chipped in seven kills.

Freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) posted 21 digs for her fifth match of 20 or more digs on the year and third straight outing with over 20 digs. Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) distributed 23 assists with seven digs, and sophomore Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) handed out 18 assists with six digs.

Trailing 12-10 midway through set one, the Bears used a 9-1 run to pull ahead 19-13. Brown did not allow Columbia to pull any closer than four points the rest of the way in the 25-18 set win. Ehlert (seven kills, seven digs) and Grover (five kills, five digs) led the Bears in the frame as the hosts hit .421 as a team.

Brown pushed Columbia to extra points in set two before the visitors claimed a 26-24 set win. After the Lions gained a 20-13 edge, the Bears went on a 9-1 burst to pull ahead, 22-21. Facing set point at 24-22, Columbia won four straight points to even the match at one set apiece. Stillwell terminated on four kills on .800 hitting in the frame.

In set three, Brown used a 4-0 stretch to pull within 17-16 of Columbia. The Bears pulled ahead at 22-21 prior to the Lions taking four straight points to win the period, 25-22, and stake themselves to a 2-1 set advantage.

Brown answered with a 25-17 win in set four, sending the match to a decisive fifth set. In a set that saw 10 ties and three lead changes, the Bears scored five unanswered points to extend a 16-14 lead into a 21-14 advantage, maintaining at least a six-point lead the rest of the way.

In a set five that witnessed eight ties and two lead changes, the Bears gained an 8-7 lead at the switch and won three of the contest's last four points after Columbia tied the score at 12-12. Grover connected on four kills on .500 hitting in the frame.

For Columbia, Madeleine Casey notched a match-best 22 kills on .326 hitting, Audrey Cheng compiled a match-high 42 assists with 19 digs and nine kills, and Kalie Wood came up with a match-high 24 digs.

The Bears split the season series with Columbia, 1-1. The Lions took a 3-1 decision in New York, N.Y., on Oct. 6.
