PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Makena Ehlert tallied a career-high 22 kills, and freshman Kristin Sellers posted a double-double on 32 assists and 10 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell to Cornell University, 3-2 (18-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-20), on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Â
In the season finale for both teams, the Bears (11-13, 4-10 Ivy) opened the match with a win in set one before the visiting Big Red (14-10, 9-5 Ivy) took the following three frames.
Â
"Attacking wise we did a good job overall," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "Having Sabrina Stillwell back was great, and our pin hitters did a good job. We hit .213, but Cornell was very prepared. Their offense was clicking, and defensively they did a good job of slowing things down at the net. We just needed to be a little more defensive to slow them down."
Â
Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) added eight digs to her career-best 22 kills and finished the year with double-figure kills in six straight matches and in nine of her last 10 contests. Sophomore Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered 12 kills and five digs for her 13th double-figure kill match of the year.
Â
Senior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) posted 10 kills for her 15th double-figure kill match in 20 matches played this season. She closed her career with 1,027 career kills ranking eighth all-time at Brown and passing Kathryn Rice '00 (1,022 career kills).
Â
Freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) totaled a season-high 27 digs. She posted 20 or more digs in each of her last four matches and in five of her last six contests of the year.
Â
Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched her ninth double-double as a rookie behind her 32 assists and 10 digs, senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) registered 10 digs, and sophomore Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) dished out 13 assists.
Â
"This was a memorable season for me as a first-year head coach," Kim said. "The level of buy-in and maturity from this team – I could not have asked for a better group of young women. They kept wanting more. I'm a little sad that the season is over because I think that we are still on a trajectory where we have been getting better each week."
Â
Prior to the match, Brown honored the three members of its Class of 2019 – Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.), Courtney Palm (St. Louis, Mo.), and Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) – for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.
Â
After Cornell opened set one with a 6-0 lead, Brown battled back to knot the score at 8-8. With the score tied at 14-14, Brown used a 7-2 spurt to pull ahead 21-16 before closing out a 25-18 set win. Ehlert landed six kills as the hosts hit .300 in the set.
Â
Brown remained within 11-9 of Cornell early in set two prior to the Big Red using a 7-0 run to gain an 18-9 advantage. Brown could pull no closer than seven points the rest of the way as Cornell took the frame, 25-14. Ehlert added another four kills in the stanza.
Â
In set three, the Bears tallied four straight points to cut their deficit to 14-12. The Bears made a late 6-1 run in the frame to cut Cornell's margin to 24-23 before the visitors hung on for a 25-23 set win. Ehlert terminated on eight kills in the frame, and Brown hit .310 as a team.
