BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Cameron Daly (Meredith, N.H.) and senior Lucy Srour (Potomac, Md.) both posted top-25 individual finishes as the Brown men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday at Audobon Golf Course.
Â
The men's team finished fifth overall out of 34 teams, and second among all Ivy schools with 172 points, marking the program's best finish since 2011. The women's side (182) placed seventh out of 35 programs as both teams raced in snowy and muddy conditions. Syracuse took first for the men and Columbia claimed the women's race.
Â
"The conditions were rugged and unpleasant today--the task became as much about toughness and perseverance as anything," said Brown head coach Tim Springfield. "Both squads were able to rise to meet that challenge and not every team out there was able to. Some very good teams struggled. The men surprised people today, and they did it by executing well and digging deep when it counted. Very proud of both teams."
Â
Daly moved up nine spots down the stretch to finish 22nd overall, as he completed the 10-kilometer course at 33:37.0, earning All-Region honors as a top-25 finisher. Franco Martins (Orlando, Fla.) was 33rd in a time of 33:46.3, before Tyler Smith (Vernon Hills, Ill.) crossed two spots later at 33:48.7.
Â
David Scherrer (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Tom Hale (Loudonville, N.Y.) then placed 37th and 47th, respectively, at 33:55.6 and 34:07.0. Dominic Morganti (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished the race in a time of 34:43.1.
Â
Srour also claimed All-Region accolades on the women's side as she placed 17th overall, completing the 6-kilometer race at 22:17.6. Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) made a big charge from the 3-kilometer mark as she passed 32 runners for 36th-place in a time of 22:39.9.
Â
Rookie Maya Smith was third on the team and 39th overall at 22:41.9, before senior Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, N.J.) crossed five spots later at 22:47.2. Rookie Emily Kompelien was right behind at 46th-place and finished in a time of 22:48.9 to round out the scorers. Smith and Kompelien were third and fourth among all freshmen finishers.
