LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Junior Trey Keeley earned two wins, and four other Bears gained one win apiece as Brown University wrestling competed at the 37th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Â
At an event that featured 13 of the top 25 and five of the top 10 teams in the nation, the Bears totaled six wins on the day, including one technical fall and two major decisions.
Â
"The Cliff Keen Invitational is an event that features some of the nation's top teams and wrestlers every year," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "This was a good chance for us to test ourselves against high-level competition early in the season. We'll learn from today and use these lessons to prepare ourselves for two more challenging tournaments before getting into our dual season."
Â
At 125 pounds, Keeley (Washington, Ill.) tallied victories over Oklahoma's Christian Moody and No. 11 seeded Cole Verner of Wyoming in consolation action. Keeley remained in competition with his 15-9 win over Verner before dropping a decision to Clarion's Tyshawn White.
Â
Junior Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.) registered a 15-0 technical fall win over Ethan Wendell of Highline in the round of 32 at 149 pounds.
Â
Seniors Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) and Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) each posted a major decision victory. LaBrie topped American's Kizhan Clarke, 10-1, in the consolation at 157 pounds, and Viruet beat Navy's Tanner Skidgel, 14-0, in the round of 32 at 165 pounds.
Â
Freshman Colin Realbuto (Somers, N.Y.) added a 7-4 win over Harvard's Tyler Tarsi in consolation competition at 141 pounds.
Â
At the conclusion of its competition on the day, Brown stood in 34th place out of 43 schools in the team standings. Among EIWA foes, the Bears ranked ahead of Binghamton (37th) and just behind American (32nd) and Harvard (33rd).
Â
Next, Brown competes at the Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill., from Dec. 29-30.
