BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Shayna Mehta scored a game-high 23 points, but Brown University women's basketball dropped a 72-51 decision to Boston University on Monday night at Case Gymnasium.
The Bears (1-2) remained within 38-30 of the Terriers (1-1) in the third quarter before the hosts used an 18-3 run to take a 56-33 edge early in the final frame.
"I give BU a lot of credit," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "They outplayed us in every quarter, executed, and moved the ball really quickly. They were well coached. On a positive note, we moved the ball better on offense, and the shots just didn't fall, especially in the beginning when it really mattered. We had open shots, and we can build on that as it was an improvement from our last game."
Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) netted her 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting and added a team-high seven rebounds. She scored in double-figures for the 70th time in her career and eclipsed 20 points for the 23rd time in her career.
With a pair of 3-pointers in the game, Mehta now has 200 career made 3-pointers, becoming the third student-athlete in program history and 11th student-athlete in Ivy League history to connect on 200 career triples.
Junior guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) tallied seven points and four rebounds, and junior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) registered six points and three rebounds.
Senior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) opened the game's scoring with a 3-pointer from the right corner before back-to-back baskets from Mehta kept Brown within 11-9 of BU with 2:39 to go in the opening period. Freshman guard Maddie Mullin (Wellesley, Mass.) converted a layup in transition to allow the Bears to remain within 17-11 of the Terriers at the end of the first quarter.
The Terriers took a 32-13 lead with 2:33 left in the second quarter, capping a 16-2 run. Brown responded with an 8-1 spurt behind four points apiece from Mehta and Green, cutting the hosts' edge to 33-21 at the half.
The Bears used a 7-0 run behind baskets from Steeves and senior guard Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and three free throws from Mehta to come within 38-30 of BU with 4:08 to go in the third quarter. Despite a 3-pointer from the top of the key from Mehta, BU took a 52-33 lead into the fourth quarter on a 14-3 run.
After BU extended its lead to 56-33 early in the fourth quarter, a pair of buckets from Mehta brought the score to 60-37. Mehta hit her 200th career 3-pointer at the 5:34 mark of the period, making the score 62-40. Down the stretch, Mullin connected on a wing 3-pointer, and Gaziano converted an old-fashioned 3-point play.
For BU, Nia Irving posted a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds, Payton Hauck netted 16 points, and Katie Nelson and Ashley Sieper each scored 10 points. Nelson dished out a game-high seven assists.
