PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Makena Ehlert posted her second double-double of the weekend on a match-high 10 kills and 10 digs, but Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14) decision to reigning Ivy League champion Princeton University on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Â
Facing the three-time defending conference champions, the Bears (9-11, 2-8 Ivy) competed in each set before falling to the Tigers (15-6, 8-2 Ivy) – who hit .419 in the match – in straight sets.
Â
"Princeton is a mature team that has won the league the last three years," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "They are very physical at the net. Their block did a good job containing us, and they deflected really well. They were able to deflect balls to their defenders and navigate some of our tougher swings. They did a great job preparing for us."
Â
Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) tallied her fifth double-double of the year and her fourth double-double in her last five matches. She has notched double-digit kills in five of her last six outings.
Â
Senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) registered her 10th double-figure dig performance of the season on 12 digs, and freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) compiled her 16th double-figure dig effort of the year on 11 digs. Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) added 12 assists.
Â
"I was really proud of our team for their fight," Kim said. "There were some really strong rallies. One of the things that the stats don't show is how many clean swings we had over and over again. I have to credit Princeton for being prepared defensively. We did a good job finding swings. We just have to grow into a team that can stay steady in that transition phase to give our team multiple looks until we crack it."
Â
In set one, Brown remained within 14-10 before Princeton used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 18-10. The Bears cut their deficit to five points on two occasions before the Tigers closed out a 25-15 set win. Merten tallied nine digs in the stanza.
Â
Despite six kills on .357 hitting from Ehlert, the Bears fell to the Tigers, 25-16, in set two. Brown held an early 7-5 lead and stayed within 12-10 prior to Princeton scoring seven of the next eight points to move ahead 19-11.
Â
Princeton claimed a 7-2 edge early in set three and extended its advantage to 10 points at 17-7. Brown cut the margin to 22-14 before the Tigers notched three straight points to take the set 25-14.
Â
For Princeton, Jessie Harris charted a double-double on match highs in assists (40) and digs (15), Alexa Underwood tallied 10 kills, and Cameron Dames tacked on 14 digs. The Tigers swept the season series from the Bears as Princeton topped Brown, 3-0, on Sept. 28.
Â
Next, Brown plays its final road contests of the season at Dartmouth on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and at Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
