HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Makena Ehlert posted her sixth double-double of the year on 12 kills and 15 digs, and senior Elisa Merten tallied a career-high 16 kills, but Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-10) decision to Dartmouth College on Friday night at Leede Arena.
Â
The Bears (9-12, 2-9 Ivy) claimed the first two sets before the host Big Green (10-12, 5-6 Ivy) rallied to take the final three frames.
Â
"Defensively we were really strong," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "We made a lot of digs, and even in moments when we lost some control we were able to extend rallies and give ourselves a chance to score points."
Â
Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) registered her fifth double-double in her last six matches and has now posted double-figure kills in six of her last seven outings. Merten (Woodside, Calif.) added seven digs to her career-best 16 kills.
Â
Sophomore Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered 13 kills and eight digs for her 10th double-figure kill match of the year. Junior Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) compiled a match-best eight blocks, and freshman Olivia Dukat (Roswell, Ga.) notched a season-high eight kills.
Â
"Eliza, Elisa, and Makena helped manage the game, and Olivia did a really good job again and was one of our top attackers," Kim said. "We just needed a little more offense from our middles, and we are hoping that we can do that tomorrow to make the jobs easier for Eliza, Elisa, and Makena."
Â
Freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) tallied a career-high 26 digs for her third match as a rookie with 20 or more digs. Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched 28 assists and nine digs, and sophomore Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) contributed 18 assists and nine digs.
Â
The Bears opened the match with a 25-23 win in set one. After Dartmouth gained a 14-9 edge, Brown responded with an 8-2 run to pull ahead 17-16. The Bears used a 5-0 streak to grab a 22-18 lead before closing out the set. Merten notched four kills in the frame.
Â
Brown extended its set advantage to 2-0 behind a 25-19 win in set two. With the score tied at 12-12, Brown tallied four unanswered points to pull ahead 16-12 and maintained at least a three-point margin the rest of the way. Winkler came up with 11 digs in the stanza.
Â
In set three, the hosts took a narrow 25-23 decision to extend the match. The two sides remained tied at 17-17 before Dartmouth used a 7-3 run to gain a 24-20 edge. Brown answered with three straight points before the Big Green captured the set. Ehlert had six digs in the period.
Â
The Big Green evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 win in set four. Dartmouth staked itself to a lead of 18-11 and did not allow Brown to pull any closer than four points for the duration. Merten terminated on six kills in the stanza.
Â
In set five, Brown kept within 8-6 of Dartmouth at the switch before the hosts used a 5-1 run to pull ahead 13-7. The Bears notched three straight points to cut the margin to 13-10 prior to the Big Green closing the match with a 15-10 set win.
