PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's soccer team took a one-goal lead early in the second half, but Cornell answered with two quick scores as the Bears fell to the Big Red, 2-1, in Saturday's Ivy League contest at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown moved to 7-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Ivy League, while Cornell improved to 10-3-0, 3-1-0.
Freshman James Swomley (Newton, Massachusetts) made two saves for the Bears. Ryan Shellow had three stops in the win for Cornell. Cornell outshot Brown, 15-12.
Cornell held a slim 7-6 shot advantage in a scoreless opening half. John Vrablic (Avon, Ohio) had two bids on target in the stanza.
The Bears jumped in front just 20 seconds into the second half on a Cornell own goal. A Cornell defender sent a pass back to Shellow and the ball was misplayed as it rolled into the back of the net.
Cornell bounced back less than three minutes later when John Scearce converted a one-timer on a pass from Nick Allen to even the score.
The Big Red added a second goal in the 52nd minute to gain the lead, as Charles Touche scored on a rebound in front of the net, pushing the visitors on top, 2-1.
Brown continued to press on the offensive end, highlighted by a Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) shot on net that was turned away by Shellow to preserve the score, but the Big Red held back the attack. Brown's free kick in the offensive end during the final minute was sent into the box but punched away by Shellow as the Big Red secured the win.
Howell and rookie Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) paced the Bears with three shots apiece.
Brown will host Hofstra in non-conference action on Tuesday at 7 PM.
