PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Joseph Lee (Vernon Hills, Ill.) scored the lone goal of the game and James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) notched his second shutout as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Providence College, 1-0, in Tuesday's non-conference match at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (7-5-0, 1-2-0 Ivy League) earned its third-straight win and second shutout in as many games, snapping Providence's three-game shutout streak. Providence moved to 7-5-1 overall.
Swomley, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, made two stops for his second career shutout. Colin Miller made one save for the Friars.
Brown and PC played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes, as neither team was able to put a shot on target. The Bears blocked back-to-back shots by Gil Santos in the final minute of the first half to preserve the tie.
Santos came right back with a shot on net three minutes into the second half, but it went right into the arms of Swomley, before Miller returned the favor at 61:09 when he denied Will Crain (Athens, Ga.) on a free kick.
Lee scored his first career goal in the 69th minute, knocking in a header after a corner kick to give Brown the lead, 1-0. Gabe Welp (West Chester, Ohio) also earned an assist on the play.
The Bears held back some late pressure by the Friars in the closing minutes of regulation. Swomley was able to deny Joao Serrano at 86:40 and Gil Santos missed wide on the rebound as the Bears claimed the Ocean State win.
Brown will host Cornell on Saturday at 3 PM.
