PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) scored the only goal of the game in double overtime to send the Brown men's soccer team past Harvard, 1-0, in Saturday's Ivy League contest at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (6-5-0, 1-2-0) earned its second straight victory, moving to 3-0 in overtime games this season. Harvard dropped to 3-9-0, 1-2-0.
Rookie James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) made two saves in the win for the Bears. Matt Freese had four stops for the Crimson.
Harvard edged Brown with an 8-7 shot advantage in a scoreless opening half, while the Bears had three shots on target in the stanza.
Brown enjoyed a strong chance at 68:08, when Howell drove down the right side and found Nicolas Perez (Atlanta, Ga.) in front, but his shot went just wide left. Swomley kept the Bears in the game with ten minutes left in regulation, as he denied Cesar Farias with a leaping save, sending the ball just over the crossbar to maintain the even score and eventually force overtime.
Harvard took the only two shots in the first overtime despite the Bears controlling possession for a majority of the period.
Howell notched the game winner in the 103rd minute with his second goal of the season. Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) traveled down the left side into Harvard territory and flicked a pass toward the goal, where Howell made space and hit the one-timer past Freese, securing the team's first Ivy win of the season. Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also earned an assist on the play.
Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) paced Brown with three shots. Schiller leads the Bears with four assists and ten points this season.
Brown will continue its four-game home stand against Providence College on Tuesday night at 7 PM.
